Picture quality difference - An observation

I have now had my D7000 since November of 2010. It has gone with me to Whistler and Vancouver to shoot mountain landscapes and the World Bob Sled Championships. It went to Guatemala for 14 days where we did 4000 pictures of one of the most beautiful countries on this earth. The only thing that was more beautiful than the magnificent sights of Guatemala was the spirit of a magnificent people. The camera made it to the Bahamas, Jamaica, and has been used all over the southern USA. I have shot two seasons of softball at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette, and taken thousands of shots out in the parks for our youth leagues.

This week I realized how lucky I am to have a D7000. My daughter and a few of her friends are in Guatemala again. I didn't go, so my camera stayed behind. A few months prior to them leaving one of my daughter's friends did buy a D5100 and I have yet to see the results from that camera. The pictures being Emailed home every night do allow me to feel like I'm on the trip with my daughter, but the quality of the pictures from her and all of her friends are just lacking. To be fair to the other companies I'm not going to mention the brands of the cameras on this trip, but I'm realizing that I'm just one lucky guy to have this beautiful D7000.

My D7000 and a few lenses will be making a trip to Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island of Hawaii, in a few weeks. My brother just bought the same set-up that I have. I'm looking forward to taking in, and shooting, the magnificent sights of a few of my very favorite places on Earth.

In conclusion......those of us that own the D7000 are very lucky people!

To be fair to your daughters friends....The camera does not take good pictures, the photographer does. I have seen some POS cameras take some beautiful photographs and I have seen some Top End pro cameras take some really poor photos. I would love to see you take one of those cameras and take the time to learn what it is capable to doing and then go out and shoot it. I would bet that if you put your mind to it the photos would great. You would probably be frustrated at the lack of what you could do but....

It's funny you say this because I agree that some people (me included) have a certain ability to take good shots. I have two Sony DCS pocket cameras and I'm amazed at some of the shots I've gotten in the past. When in Guatemala there are certain areas of the country that a smart person does not bring out the 35MM SLR because it will not go back home with you. In those areas I used my favorite Sony DCSP100 and got several great shots.

With that said, there is no way I can get the same quality with that camera as I can with my D7000. Prior to the D7000 I shot film with the F3 and I felt the same way about that camera. I stand by my statement that I'm one lucky guy to have a D7000, but I agree with everything you said!

That is true to a point. The camera can take a good picture right out of the box. The person needs experience to take a good picture, unless it's by accident.
A good photographer, with a D7000 and good lens, will probably take a better picture than a good photographer with a POS camera.
Put the D7000 on "Auto" and take a picture, and it will probably be a better picture, than the POS camera set on "Auto" will take.
The D7000 has features that the POS camera doesn't have, and is sure to take better pictures, such as a picture taken at ISO 3200. That picture should be pretty clean. But, take the same picture, at the same setting, on the POS camera, and you'll surely have a lot of noise in the picture.
The D7000 probably takes more fps than the POS, it has AF adjustment that the POS doesn't have, it has commander mode through the built-in pop up flash that the POS probably doesn't have, etc.............
So see, when you say it's the person and not the camera, that's true to a point. :)

Is that the show where they go around picking up gators people report? I watched that for the first time a few days ago and it was pretty good. Those small ones still bite hard.
