Upgrading from D7000?

So I've been thinking about upgrading from my D7000. I wouldn't object to a D7500 but I really like having two card slots. Would like something with better low light performance and better for action/movement. Also thinking about just waiting to see what happens. I do my business through a camera store about 2 hours travel from me. Website shows a D7500 body. Just considering options and looking for any thoughts. Thanks.

If you want to stay with a DX camera your only real options are a D500, D7500, or find a D7200 (A used, refurb, or one still in stock) Another would be a FX camera or a Mirror-less DX or FX camera. Personally, I would look for a good D7200.

I still have my D7000 around as a 2nd option, but I went to and FX body D750 when they were being discounted in 2019. I already was using FX lenses in the telephoto range, I just needed the kit 24-120mm f/4 lens and a wide prime to supplement the kit.

I can say for sure that I got that better low-light performance (I actually use the auto-ISO more regularly now, never was happy with the D7000 above ISO 800). For action-movement there are more autofocus points to track with. And the photos just have a "smoother" look all-around. Sharp, but the color tones just flow and blend more naturally.

But if you want to stick with the DX format, I read more comments about people preferring the D7200 over the D7500.

I just recently upgraded from a D5500 to a D500. The D500 is of course acclaimed as a great action/movement camera, and its low light/high ISO performance seems to be equally vaunted if you check test results and reviews at sites like dxomark.com and imaging-resource.com. Although I haven't had mine long enough to do a thorough comparison to my D5500, I am extremely impressed with what I've seen so far. I would certainly consider it an option.

If the D500 is in your budget, I would recommend it highly since you mentioned action. In my opinion this is the best DSLR Nikon makes for sports, wildlife, etc. I own the D7100, D7200, and D500. The D500 is significantly better than the D7100 and 7200 in any category related to action photography. The D7500 is essentially a stripped down D500. It's also significantly less money. I'd certainly recommend that camera if you are looking to stay in a lower price range.

You could go the route Fred mentioned, with the D850, to get a full frame camera. It's no better than the D500 for action, costs a great deal more, and requires that you have FX lenses. On the other hand it also produces fantastic image quality and is an amazing all around camera for any type of photography you might want to use it for.

Some more info. For a budget, I've currently thinking of around $1500 as a maximum. My go to lens for the vast majority of my photography is my Tamron 24-70.

If that is your budget and your lens, and if it is the G2 version, I have to recommended the Z5. It is full frame, it has in body image stabilization, and EVF With WYSIWYG. That with the FTZ adapter will allow you to use f mount glass. Tamron needs to be G2. I am using my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 lens on my Z6.

You should at least give it a look. Body only is $996.99 at B&H. There are kits as well.

The 24-70 is not the newer G2 version.

I don't have a particular recommendation - just want to be sure you are informed as to some of the differences with the D7500 vs. the D500 or D7200. As you already know, the D7500 only has one card slot. For action shots, it won't be as fast as the D500's speed although it shares the same sensor as the D500. And Nikon didn't make a grip to go with it. There is at least one aftermarket grip out there made to be compatible, but I'm pretty sure the body lacks the terminal on the bottom that usually communicates with a grip. The D7200 offers a nice package - one of the things Nikon wanted to do was to further the gap between the consumer bodies and the pro bodies (hence the removal of some good features). The D7200 has a much better sensor than your D7000 but not quite as good as the sensor in the D7500/D500. But the sensor in the D7200 is no slouch either. There is definitely noticeable improvement over your D7000 sensor.

There have been advances made since your D7000 so you should be able to find a body that will offer room to grow. Good luck with your search - narrowing down the field can sometimes feel daunting. There may be pros and cons for each body you consider. Just weigh the trade offs and hopefully be able to decide which features are the most important for your style of shooting. :)

Thanks for all the input. I'm not in a super-big rush so I've got time consider my options. Top priority is getting our daughter moved into her first apartment so we will be spending some funds helping her get set up.
