Funny noise?

I was out this morning along the river Leven in Cumbria (totally irrelevant really), I noticed that occasionally when I tilted the lens downwards it made a noise as if the mirror was rising and falling. Didn't do it all of the time but a little concerning. Does anyone have any clues as to what it could be? A setting somewhere?

Thanks

Brian

It could be VR. After focusing a shot if the camera is tiled the lense will engage the VR make a clunk noise. It also can be felt. You could try turning off VR to test.

....I noticed that occasionally when I tilted the lens downwards it made a noise as if the mirror was rising and falling.

The mirror is inside the body so if you think it might be the mirror, can you remove the lens and put the body cap on the body? Then try tilting the camera down and up to hear if it continues. If not, then while the lens is off the body, move the lens into various positions and listen for the sound.

Hopefully it will help isolate the issue.

Before I took the lens off I tried it again. No noise, took the lens off and again no noise. I switched it to Live View and the sound it made sounded very similar to my 'problem'. So I have no idea what's going on. Will try it over the next few days with different lens's and see if it comes back. Another thing I noticed (again with the macro lens on), when I switched LV on all I could see was a white blurry screen, I had to manually focus it to get a normal picture. It must be me having a bad day.

Something else you can try is to put the body into Mirror Up. That is typically done to clean the sensor. Remove the lens and put the body front down on a table. Follow the directions to put your D7000 into Mirror Up mode. Keeping the opening where the sensor is located pointed down to the ground, hold it up over your head so you can see inside. Move it around keeping the opening pointed down to prevent dust from getting inside. See if you notice anything.

Mirror Up is basically the same position as Live View except the sensor isn't engaged. Go to 1:30 in the video where it gives directions on how to turn on Mirror Up.

NOTE: Usually your battery needs to be at least 50%. If not, you won't be able to put the body into Mirror Up.

Did as you suggested, couldn't find anything wrong. It's a good job you mentioned the battery charge, the mirror lock up was greyed out but noticed that the battery was less than 40%. Put the spare in and everything now seems OK. I don't suppose the low battery charge had anything to do with my problem or back button focussing which I am playing about with? (Clutching at straws now). Anyway, will keep my eye on it.

Thanks again for your help

The mirror lock up option will be greyed out if the battery's percent isn't high enough. But having a battery lower than 50% shouldn't be causing the noise.

So what's up with BBF? That doesn't change anything other than switches the back button to auto focus.
