My 55-300 mm lens doesn't seem to close properly

Hello guys,

Am totally new to photography and learning my ropes with my D7000. I hardly use my DSLR. Only used it recently for a trip.

I just noticed today that my 55-300 lens doesn't close all the way back into itself (don't know how to explain it..sorry!!) when I try to zoom out. The lens cap, when put on, is not flush with the body of the lens like my 18-140 is.

Thanks much for your time.

See image below. Is this lens damaged due to my use?

on the side of the lens, you should have an M/A switch. Put it to M and turn the focus ring until it's flush. Do NOT force it. It should turn easily with the M/A switch on the M position.

Like @Blacktop says, the very end of your lens will move in / out as you focus. Focus the lens on a distant object then a near one, and you will see the difference.

Exactly that

I have the lens and I never worry about it being in or out, hasn't cause me any issues.
