Why Why oh Why can I not save the damn update to my SD card. My computer repeatedly tells me the card is locked. Several new cards purchased. Nikon installation updates followed still cant get the flamming update onto the cards. I am not stupid I have done all the things that might be generally overlooked. Five bleeding months this has been going on. Anyone had similar issues?

Make sure the cards aren't locked up.....with the tab on the side of the cards.

Thats been checked sooooo many times but thanks.
It is to my mind a system thing with the card that the camera is telling the outside world nothing but nothing will write to it other than the camera.

Aside form making sure the cards are not locked, always format your cards in camera. Also, always make sure you don't have previous versions of the firmware on your pc, in the same location to where you are downloading.

I usually just save/unzip the update packages to my computer's desktop, and then simply drag/drop the BIN file to the root of the SD card in the reader...

The nikon guidelines have been followed to the letter.

That was your first mistake...:)

Their updates are simple compressed files. Download the file to your computer. double click on the file. this will uncompress the file, and put it in a folder... you need to navigate to the folder it creates, and find the BIN file... then simply copy/drag/drop the BIN file only to the SD card... You do have the SD card plugged into the computer, right?

Done it.Fred.

THE sticking point is the card (and there have been many over the months have all comne back when the file is copied and pasted dragged and dropped and any other form of moving a file that you can think of. It always come back to the card saying it is "Write Protected..........................etc. and it isn't.

So you download the update and then, step by step, what are you doing?

I ask because many of the firmware updates require you to download the update file. You then have to extract that file and (and this is the critical step I see overlooked) you need to RUN the executable file which then, in turn, creates the .BIN file. Then you move *that* file to the SD card, put the card in your camera and update the firmware via the menu.

I've seen many people move the downloaded file (in its still-compressed state), or the extracted file, to the SD card before running the .exe file and that, obviously, does not work.

His problem is that he can not copy anything to his SD card. If that is the case, i see this as being an issue with his computer and not the Nikon firmware update.

Maybe it's with the SD card? Just hazarding a guess here at this point, as nothing else seems to be working. Not all SD cards are created equal. Any camera shops nearby where you could get this resolved?

Fish the file has been unzipped.
Fred all my SD Cards and i have many different makes model and sizes are all having the same issue it is the .bin file that won't copy over. I have even managed to copy a word file.

Seems I am doomed to run on old firmware.

Okay.... Do you have anti-virus/malware software running?????? BIN means something in the computer world... Turn OFF all your virus/malware software. and then try to copy the BIN file... Sounds like the virus stuff is blocking a "write" for that file type...

So you have NO trouble copying other files to the SD cards, the ONLY time you have issue is when you try to copy over a .bin file? If that's the case I'm stumped because a file copy doesn't require the file to be readable since it's just a movement of data from one location to another. Like the Post Office, they don't have to read your mail in order to move it.

My suggestion is to copy the .bin file to a USB and carry the USB drive and the SD card to a different computer and try from there. If this does not work then the problem is something you are doing/not doing.
