I am gonna guess and say that answer is relative to what you plan to use the camera for.

To cover everything you need a good wide angle, a medium length prime/portrait lens 50mm or 85mm, maybe a good true macro lens and a telephoto or long zoom of some kind for sports and wildlife.

I can't afford my "must have" lenses so I use an 18-70mm AF Nikkor and a 70-300mm ED VR lens. I will be adding a 50mm prime soon.

These three are a good start, Nikon"s 14-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and the 70-200 VrII 2.8. From there you could pick up some primes for more serious work.

Haha I could see that Dave! If I could have ALL of them I would :)

Mike Thank you for your reply. :)

On a serious note, many people have lenses that allow them to cover the entire gambit of focal lengths, in my case I go from 14mm to 300mm. After you have all the focal lengths covered, consider a macro (60mm or 105mm) and possibly a couple of primes for shooting in low light.

I have other lenses, but if the place were suddenly on fire I'd grab my Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, my Nikon 18-105mm and two of my Nikon primes; the 35mm f/1.8G and 85mm f/1.8G because the rest I could live without.

Sorry I should have included that.. I like to do photos of children and scenic photos (nature and such)

That type of photography can be done very well with any of the lenses mentioned except maybe the widest of angle lens. Nature, landscapes and even portraits can be done very well with a longer telephoto lens alone. Really wide lenses can be used for scenic but may not be the best choice for portraits.

Sounds like you need a tripod and some practice and discovery. Since you don't know for sure what you MUST be able to do where your current lenses simply cannot, I would invest into a proper flash and a decent tripod. I really like the combo I ended up getting, for function, quality, and price points.

A good flash WILL breathe a whole new life into even kit lenses, even in situations you wouldn't expect it to.

I must agree with the crowd. Your inquiry is very vague and lacks the details needed on what you intend to do and if you intend to use your equipment as a pro.

Some prefers prime due to their lighter weight and some prefers zoom lenses. Budget is something that needs to be considered also.

To anwer your question, as a full frame user, I cannot live with out the Nikon 24-70mm and 70-200mm f2.8 VRII. The rest of my lenses are nice to have.

I went through a period shortly after getting my D7000 in which I tried to decide what ultimate lens to get next. But as I used the camera more, I realized the 18-105 was meeting the vast majority of my needs at this time and that purchasing another lens so soon wouldn't be a good idea for me. I may still add another lens in the future but I want to make sure it's something I can justify.

First things first. You need a 35f1.8 or a50 f1.8 . Then build from there. If you do a lot of walk abouts like I do, you might like a 16-85. It serves me well.

I am no pro by any means. Ever since I was a child I always said I wanted to be a photographer when I grow up. I was always told that Photographers are nothing.. and rarely do they make money or become anything. (Someone trying to bring me down) Here I am now 24 and this is my first DSLR.

I really appreciate all of your responses and suggestions. I hope to learn and grow with help from this forum. So again thank you all for your input.
