D7000 commander mode?

Hello, I just realized I can sell my D5100 and SU-800 and have enough to almost buy a D7000. Am I correct in reading that there is a built in commander mode and won't need the SU-800 to fire off my SB-600's anymore? Seems like the right thing to do if so?

Yes the D-7000 does have the built in commander mode.

That would be my choice, and seems a real good plan. There are differences though.

Other than that D7100 has a commander, it is with minor differences - SU-800 controls three remote groups, A,B,C, and camera commander does only two remotes, A&B. And the SU-800 is red IR filtered to block visible light, for less blinking in pictures of subject. But the D7100 offers FV Lock feature not in D5100, which lets Function Button trigger preflash and get the blinking over with, and then the subsequent shutter button causes no flashing or blinking. And the camera commander is slightly more reliable in triggering in longer distances.

Re: Question about camera

Yep. Quite logical.
The D7k is a step up definitely from the D5100.
And you wouldn't need the SU800 for triggering an off camera flash, but that being said, the SU800 is a good commander module, considering that's what it's made for.
If the price you getting for the SU800 is not going to make much difference, i would suggest keeping it as you may feel the need for it, if you decide to do variations of flash photography...

Re: Question about camera

Ooh ok good, yeah that is true, if I have to go into a menu every time I wanted to change the flashes settings that would be a down side. I like that it is really easy to change the flash power of any group with just a few buttons on the SU-800 I'll contemplate keeping it. I have other electronics I can sell to make up for the difference

Eh, changed my mind, Ill sell it, its a third of the price of the new body so it will help to get it, and ill see how well the built in one does. I can probably get one later if I think I need it, might even find one cheaper than Ill sell this one for! ha

Just got the D7000 in the mail, its it beautiful!

So far after taking a few pictures, ive notices the shutter button is a lot different than the D5100 you just have to barely touch it to focus, the D5100 had a noticeable stop when pressing on it to focus than press more to take the picture, but im sure ill get used to that quick. The sound it makes when taking a picture is a lot different, I like it.

Im going to have to get used to the button placement. Ive accidentally pressed the DOF preview button a few times (not knowing) and the flash went off with this terrifying sound. Good thing a quick google search helped me realize what I was doing. Its nice having two dials for the settings instead of one and setting off my flashes wirelessly was easy and is nice not having to have an extra attachment to do it.

For my first picture I re-took the shot of my D5100 im selling since the existing picture is from my phone, its in the marketplace if anyone is interested

I'm not certain of your situation, but perhaps the Fn function button (just above the DOF button) is programmed for FV Lock (D7000 manual page 149 and page 230). The DOF button would not do that, but the Fn button could. FV Lock causes the TTL preflash then and there, and does not repeat it at the next shutter button (if the L showing still locked is still on). One reason would be to prevent preflash from causing pictures of the subject blinking.
