Hi guys...pardon me if this question has been asked before. I try to search it here but somehow i got script error and using google also didnt return me any matching result.
Anyway, here is my problem.
Today i try to use the feature role play of cards. SO i choose card 1 to save RAW and card 2 jpeg.
I chose image quality as RAW + jpeg (fine). Both card are empty and the write lock swicth is OFF. Finished taking photos of my kids,i found that all of the photos were save in card 1.I had both raws and jpegs images recorded in card no 1. Card 2 is blank.

I tried several time then, but still the photos are all save in card 1.
I had updated the latest firmware last week.
Please help..

thanks

Zaidi

Read the manual, read the forum, the answer is there many times over (and over (and over)).

Psst - change your Card 2 function from something other than overflow (that's more than I should have told you - you can figure out where it is yourself).

oh Jake...thanks...

btw, that's not the point that i'm asking. i read the manual so many time.... page 89 of the manual doesnt explain any details beside explaining what each setting is like. i had the manual with me all the time.... all other references i google and also the book by digital darrel doesnt mentioned about this either.

i followed every step but what could go wrong.

Here is my setup once again

image quality = RAW + jpeg(fine)
Role played by card in Slot 2= RAW slot 1 -JPEG slot 2
both SD cards are empty (sandisk 16GB extreme )
IIRC, that's is the correct setup for me to have all RAWs files in slot 1 and all JPEG files in slot 2.
However, that doesnt come out in reality. All raws and jpegs files are both stored in card 1, while card 2 is empty.

Make sure the card in slot 2 is not "write locked"; there's a little tab on the card that slides up and down to prevent the card from being over-written. If this tab is in the "Lock" position, your camera won't be able to write to the card; you want the switch "up", like you see here:

Thinking along with what Horoscope said, make sure you can write to card 2. Just pop out card 1 and take some pictures to be sure they can be written to card 2. It might be locked or it might be bad or possible a camera problem. Removing card 1 will force your camera to use card 2. If there is a problem writing, it will make itself known.

If both options are set correctly and independently (i.e. Image Quality = RAW and JPEG and Card 2 function set to Card 1 RAW/Card 2 JPEG) then the issue must be with the card. Have you tried reformatting card 2, which I saw was unlocked btw, (unlike Fish, who you didn't seem to notice posted the lock question, poking me instead ;) )?

nick and jake, thanks once again...u guys maybe got a point...maybe the card have bad sector or problem..
so first, i put card2 into slot1, no card in slot 2, shot jpeg and then raw... both are fine and save in card2 (in slot 1)..

so card 2 is healthy then...

second, i format the card 2 :- a. using the body to format
b. took it out and format it on my computer

test shot once again (with only card 2 in slot 1) ..seem OK

and then i put back card 1 into slot 1, card 2 into slot 2, using the same setup as my original posting, and shoot...

took both cards and examined. well the problem persisted. They wont let me save raw in card 1 and jpeg in card 2...

anyone face the same problem before??

i even tested with various quality like RAW+jpg (fine), RAW + jpg (normal) as well as RAW + jpg(basic) and it doenst make any different. SOmething wrong with the body??

If I am reading this correctly, you have tested both cards and they are good, but I am not seeing that you placed a single card in the camera in slot 2. Did you try that? The camera should work fine with no card in slot one, just one card in slot 2. So try that if you have not tried it. Take a good card, place it in slot 2 with no card in slot one. You should be able to save pictures. This will test the camera. Format that single card in slot 2 in the camera. This should work regardless of settings, all picture will go to slot 2 since there is no card in slot 1. If this does not work, your camera may have a problem.

FYI - never format your memory cards on your computer. Always format them in your camera. The two formats are not the same.

I noticed this in your post and wondered: "second, i format the card 2 :- a. using the body to format
b. took it out and format it on my computer"

Why did you format it in the camera, then format it again in the computer? That's not necessary! Just format your cards IN THE CAMERA! Always! Computers and cameras use different algorithms for formatting.

Nick,

bro...this is the problem. I tried putting both card in slot 2 (while no card in slot 1)... i noticed the indicator on the top LCD displayed -E-, press the shutter and the photo appear in the LCD with demo sign on the left corner. Now i knew the camera is faulty. Lucky me, i still had it under warranty.

Thanks for helping bro....

Drink on me...:very_drunk::very_drunk:

cheers,

ok..my bad english...what i mean is first i format it on the camera...taking a few shoots and testing it and still got no good result. afterthat, i took the card out of the camera...format it on my pc...and give it a try.... i knew the formatting on pc and camera is not the same...but why not trying....

Maybe there is a fault with your firmware that did not save the new update properly. I use to have this exact problem before. Once I updated it, everything went well. I use to think it was the cards or my settings. Try updating the camera again. Even though it is the same firmware you are updating, it may help. It can fix any glitches with slot 2.

Thanks Claudia, but Houston, we still have the problem.!!

I tried updating the fw twice but still cannot fix the problem. I will try doing it with a different set of SD card ...God willing, the problem will solve. Stay tune

This morning i contact Nikon service center and they said it will take 2-3 weeks to repair and the center is 200 miles away.

ok guys...this is getting weird now....the camera is not fault nor is the firmware.
just now, i manage to get my old SD card (toshiba SD 4GB class 6- very old one)..
when i put it into slot 2, automatically the counter from -E- change to some numbers (of the remaining shot)... wow...

so i tested with each of my sandisk extreme card into slot 1, and the toshiba into slot 2 and it work perfectly (raw is saved on card 1, jpeg is on card 2)

i try updating again the fw, this time i use the toshiba card to do it....

but somehow, i dont know how can the camera didnt detect the hi end sandisk card if put in slot no 2. The camera recognized it well if both sandisk cards are put inside slot 1.

now, is there anything wrong with the card once again... ??

The card that i used is sandisk extreme SDHC I class 10, 16 GB and the other one is the same type, but it's 8GB.

all this while i thought sandisk is the best card out there and most camera doesnt have any problem working with it.
TOshiba that i bought is just a low end class 4 card that i used as backup back in 2010.

Were did you buy your faulty card? I still suspect you were sold either a faulty card or a counterfeit one. These things sell by the thousands on some auction type websites.
