Walk around lens for traveling

Wow, you certainly left yourself with a hole in your focal range. If you are willing to change lenses, then just get another 18-55. If not, then the 18-105 is the next best thing.

Thank you for your replies! :)

AC016: I know, I know but I would have had a hard time selling my d3000 w/o a lens!

It seems like the general consensus would be the 18-105.

Does anyone how does the 18-105 compare to the 18-55 kit lens? Is it significantly better? I didn't particularly care for the latter.

I really have not used the 18-105 much since I got the camera up till my recent trip. I will say for a kit lens it is really nice and I will use more now for my walk around lens. It's a real nice range and the IQ seems to be good too.

General all purpose walk-around lens.....definitely the 18-105. Can't beat it for the price and IQ. I picked mine up a couple of years ago for $200.

Of all the lenses, of all the places, the kit lens 18-105 that came with my D7000 as spent more time mounted than any other lens I own.
I guess thats yet another vote for the good ole 18-105.

Best value 18-105mm, great results.

For low light 35mm 1.8G prime

Smallest/lightest - 50mm 1.8 E Series prime (manual focus)

Left to right - 18-105mm, 35mm 1.8G, 50mm 1.8 E Series.

My travel kit is 18-105mm, 55-300mm and the 35mm 1.8G in a Mountainsmith Descent AT chest pack, being all DX lenses not too heavy for the quality of the results with the D7000.
In a push it would just be the 18-105mm or the 35mm 1.8G

I have owned the 18-105 lens and I must say it is a great lens. The only problem is under low light and when you cannot use flash, focus and high ISO issues.

I'll throw something different into the ring, Tamron 17-50/2.8. Cheap, tack sharp and 2.8 allows decent low light performance.

18-200VR - there is no better. I really like this lens, I have taken thousands of photos with it mounted on a D300 & D7000.

I own D7000 as well as the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G and the Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX
I sold the basic 18-55mm kit lens with my previous camera.

My question is:

what lens do you suggest I get to replace the 18-55mm I got rid of? I don't want to spend too much, no more than $250 and I'm open to buying a Sigma or a Tamron or whatever.

I love that everyone jumped into lens recommendations (NAS anyone? LOL) without asking more what you want to do with the lens. Are you looking to use it for snapshots, family candids, vacation, indoors, outdoors. . . will you have time to compose, have a tripod/monopod, have a flash. . . is the travel a once-in-a-lifetime occasion. . .what are you trying to accomplish?

It depends on what type of photography that you intend to do for "walk around travel". I take it you want something light not a heavy back pack but something easy and can do all focal lengths.
A few weeks ago we spent time with my daughter in Havre de grace, MD. I took my basic "wedding" back pack so it has all lenses and two bodies (28/3.5,50/1.8,85/1.8,55-200kit. Well what did I use 50/1.8 at the Baltimore Aquarium and the 55-200 at the parks in Havre de grace.
What I learned and what will be my next purchase for traveling light(?). I would look to an 18-200mm lens either used or new it will not be fast but you are walking around during the day light and with D7K boost the ISO as long as its exposed well you'll be fine. This lens will be wide and give you a good zoom. Again you are not selling images or doing something for a client. Remember earlier I said my "wedding" back pack. So my 2¢ is 35/1.8 that will be great for low light and the 18-200mm (Nikon, Sigma and Tamrom) would be my choice with gear you have.
I would look at KEH for a used (6 mon warranty and generous return policy) or even Cameta for refurbished and then B&H and Adorama but thats my order of preference.
So if you think about it the D7K and two lenses the one you have and the one I mentioned would be a breeze. Oh BTW I use two systems the second system has a 2.8 55-200 and its heavy.

I know you will get all kind of answers.
