Hot shoe issues.

Maybe ignorance is bliss. I never read about any hot shoe issues with the D700 till after I snagged a winning bid on a low mileage USA model. In fact I have had a D300 for years and never heard about the supposed issues those had. From what I understand the shoe is not making good contact or gets out of line when using some speed lights. I only have a couple SB600's and they do not seem very heavy to me.

I'm now at the point where I'm wondering about the expense of a flash bracket and cable to avoid this headache.

What's the scoop on this problem?

This could be a mistake, but I assume you haven't had an issue yet??? I would suggest you wait until you have an issue before seeking a solution to a problem you might not ever have... :)

Yes, the hotshoe problem is quite well known. But it only happened to the early batches of D700. When fitted with SB-900, the thicker feet of the SB-900 can give problems to the D700 hotshoe. But all later models of the D700 are all fitted with newer hotshoes.

Good news. Thanks for clearing it up. I think the one I bought was of the newer runs. I only use the SB600 so it wouldn't matter. Glad to know.

I have a fairly early D700 and it gives me problem with both SB900 and SB800 - but was fine before I got the 900. Maybe the thicker 900 feet have caused the problem?

I've experienced this problem before after more than 3 years of using my D700. I sent my D700 to Nikon in El Segundo at the time and they replaced the hotshoe, replaced the rubber grip, cleaned the sensor and checked the AF for less than $300. Worth sending the camera in my opinion since they pretty much made it operate in like new condition.

My buddies had similar issue and was able to have the hot shoe mount issue corrected after the authorized center replaced the hot shoe.
