Are parts and repair still available?

Ok I read somewhere that these older DSLRs are no longer supported by Nikon. That parts are no longer made and Nikon has in this way forced people to buy new models if they wish them to be repairable.

I'm a huge fan of my D700 and the D300s and this is awful news to me.

Is it true? Or could there be other companies making parts for these older but still awesome DSLRs? Luckily I don't run up the shutter count really fast, but I hate the idea that the lifespan of my D700 is reduced due to lack of parts.

My D700 is working fine, with a fairly low shutter count. So hopefully it will be quite awhile before it needs any serious repairs. But I'd love to hear some good news parts and repairs anyway.

I looked at the Nikon site. Looks like the D300s is still supported for repairs, but the D700 was not in the drop-down list.

There are non-Nikon repair centers that will service the bodies providing they can get parts. Sometimes these places will buy cameras and lenses that are being sold for parts only (units that have been dropped or no longer work) and install used parts.

Thank you you for the info. I might not be able to get another D300s the sister to my D700, but it's good to know it's still supported by Nikon.
I didn't realize there was still possibility of repairs to my D700 if needed by repair places using used parts.
With macro photography being my favorite type of photography, I'm thinking it might be best to buy an old 200mm micro lens cheap enough to make my D700 work for the job.

Anyway thank you for info, I sure appreciate it.

Bill, two suggestions for you. 1) watch some of Allan Walls’ macro videos on youtube. There’s a lot of good info there. 2) use an existing lens with a reversing ring on it for macro. I’ve got a Minolta MC Rokkor 58mm f1.4 from my old SRT-101 that I bought a reversing ring for, and use that with a set of extension tubes as a very inexpensive way to do Macro.

A lens like this one is what I plan to save up for.

Without VR, you'd pretty much have to mount the lens/body on a tripod - as you might already know. Do you have a rail? That allows micro adjustments forwards and backward to move the lens/body for focusing.

VR is vibration reduction. I would only have to use a rail if I was using a spacer. I think I could be satisfied with the lens as is using its own focus ring manually.

I'm out of practice so I'd have to relearn as I go. But I was having good luck with the Nikon Ai 105mm micro other than having to manually focus using a DX camera. So I was figuring a nikon Ai 200mm micro would compensate for using a full frame camera. I believe it won't be true macro without a spacer.

Now I could be remembering wrong. It's been awhile. Lol

Yes, it looks like you have a rail. Using a rail on a tripod will allow critical fine tuning of the focus that might be more difficult when focusing by hand.

What is a spacer, Bill?

It's and adapter that goes between the lens and camera to give these older micro lenses true 1/1. Using one of them requires a rail to focus at all. If I'm remembering right. I've done it all before, but I can't always remember things.

I'm not sure what they are called anymore. But they are a tube that goes between the camera and lens without any glass in it. They use to come in different lengths.
