I feel stupid..

Alright so I recently purchased a 70-200 2.8 VR and a 24-70 2.8 off a guy who's wife passed away for a very good deal, his wife was the photog and he had no idea about photography at all or the equipment. I checked both lenses out and they were excellent condition. Then he asked me if I would be interested in the camera body as well and that it was a D700 with grip. I said I'd look at it and according to our local used websites it was about half the cost of one off of there. When I went to look at it it looked alright and I took a couple shots but was busy chatting with him and was in a bit of a rush and I NEVER LOOKED AT THE PICTURES... Yes to this minute I do not even know why I didn't and I have no answer. So please don't ask why! 😩

Anyway to 'cut the grass short' I had some lunch and picked it up to play with it and the screen won't come on at all. Nothing happens. Everything else on the camera seems to work great but the rear lcd won't display photos and the menu won't come up.
I've done everything I can think of, 2 button reset, took grip off, charged battery, checked all terminals and posts... all clean and formatted the card. Nothing changed.
The screen itself looks mint, I checked for stuck buttons but to my eye I can't see any stuck.
One thing though is the card is an 8mb Canon CF, and it looks old. Would this by chance hinder it in any way?
I had a D300s a couple years ago but I don't have any CF cards to try at the moment. I use SD cards now.

Does anyone have any advice? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have a D700, but I never had this type of issue. I also just check the effect of not having a cf card installed at all, and I still have the use of my lcd display.

Have you tried removing that cf card and then checking the lcd display?

I don't know what else you could try, other than picking up cf card to see if it changes anything.:(

Sorry I'm not much help.:(

Lol no worries!
Some more information:

Assuming that it's just the screen that isn't working, I pushed play and then delete twice to delete the photo I took, but it would not empty the card as there was only one photo. The only way to delete a photo is to Format it.
Would this mean that a button must be stuck?

I took a closer look and the only button that might be stuck is the delete button.

Also I took a photo and opened it up on my computer and this is what I got. Does this look normal to you? It looks off a bit to me. As far as I can tell from the top display is the WB is on Auto normal, F1.4, 1/50sec, ISO 200. Incandescent lighting.
The file size is only 2.29MB on jpg normal as I can't select any larger due to the 8mb card which I find odd...

Thanks for your help!

Frankly I'm surprised the card works at all being that low memory! You really need a realistic sized CF card to test with. You can find a 8 gig cf card pretty cheap even for a SanDisk extreme pro! You could test the delete button by trying to format the card without pushing the delete button. If it formats then you will know the button is messed up.

Oh I didn't even think but yeah you have to use the delete button to Format. How do you format without pushing the delete button?

What I mean is try formating the card by just pressing the mode button. If the delete button is stuck, then just pressing the mode button aught to format the card.

Got ya! Sorry a little slow tonight.
So that rules out the delete button. It wont format unless I push both.

Well I am sitting here with my D700 in my lap, and I can't think of anything else to try without a new CF card.

One thing I forgot to mention is that when I went to look at the camera there was a battery in the chamber and was dead. So I grabbed another one and put it in and it came on. I'm not sure how long that battery had sat in there.
I don't know if that has any relevance or not... The battery might have been in there for over a year.

One thing I'm happy about is the camera only has 26k shutter count.

Out of curiosity, is Live view dead as well? I am guessing yes, if the screen isn't working at all.
Just lobbing a ball into the air with that suggestion.

Sorry that happened to you. I hope you can get it to function.

The dead battery isn't an issue, and isn't likely the cause of the lcd problem.

Cool! My D700 has a low actuation count too! Then it is likely well worth getting fixed, even if you have to put a bit of money into it. Did you get it at a good price?

That is a good idea my friend and well worth a try, though I doubt it will work since nothing else has made it work.

Well I did and I didn't, he sold the camera, Nikon grip, and two batteries to me for $500 CAN. These combos are going for around $800-$1,200 in my area right now with the Canadian dollar.
But as he knows nothing about the cameras he sold me a 2x TC version II with it for nothing extra. So technically I think got a good deal! I told him to sell them to someone else because he could get more for them but he said no he was happy with the price.
I have no reason to believe he knew at all that there was an issue.
I shoot a D600 as my main camera right now, I wasn't really interested in this camera until he said what he wanted. And I wanted to buy a 2x tc for my 70-200 as it was.

Yeah, I am guessing it is dead, but I figured it can't hurt. If the monitor is dead then it won't show a thing. I wonder if it could be stuck in sleep mode as well. Either way, the results are the same. Black screen.

Maybe it is worth the repair cost.

Good idea! I just tried it, (had to figure it out first) and the screen never came on. The mirror did flip up though.

What is this sleep mode you talk about? How would a guy go about waking this beast up?
