D700 problem

I just bought a used Nikon D 700. When I snap a photo all I get is a black screen with vertical lines that are colored. The camera will store that black box with the colored vertical lines as a photo and it will only do the first photo after that when I try to take a picture it won't even save the black box for the vertical lines to the memory card. Also I can't get the live view function to work. And I'm using an 18 to 55 DX lens with this camera anyone have any ideas?

Seems you bought a defective D700. Probably the processor that is not doing whatever it usually does. Time for a trip back to the seller if you can or to Nikon for a repair.

Have you tried removing the battery and leaving it out for a few minutes? Have you also tried a factory reset? I'd tend to agree with the previous poster who mentioned a faulty camera, but you've nothing to lose by trying these things.
Another thought: Do you have the latest firmware updates? If not, you may want to try those, too. Again, nothing to lose by trying.

Good luck!

So I charged a battery overnight. I did as zerobeat said and it seems to work. I changed out my lense and now it says Folder contains no images. Its a brand new CF card that has been formatted both in computer and camera. Please Help

Thanks Mike I'll go buy another card, one recommended by nikon, and see if that helps.
Thanks Everyone for the Help, maybe I'll get this resolved. I'll let you know

When I bought mine (used, and with a similarly low amount of shutter clicks), they gave me a 32g card that would give me a "No Card Present" error. It checked out fine in my card reader, camera wouldn't budge. I had a older 256mb (yes, megabyte!) card laying around, so I updated the firmware, still no love. Picked up a Transcend 2g card, no issues. I currently use a 16g Micro SD card in an adapter on the camera, but I have a ton of smaller capacity cards the shop gave me in exchange for the 32g that wouldn't work. As Mikew has mentioned, it's best to format it in the camera. Sounds like you may be getting it sorted out!

The Nikkor 18-55 VR is a great lens but not on that camera.

You need to do some more shopping. D700 loves Nikon AF D glass so you can avoid breaking the bank.

Great camera, mine is my best photographic friend ever.

So looking for lenses I don't have to use a FX lens with this camera. I was looking at the 14-24mm FX lens. I do real estate photography and needed a wide angle. Can you make a suggestion that will not kill my bank account. Would not mind a prim lens.

A prime lens for the D700, that doesn't break the bank? I'd say the 50mm F1.8D - VERY cheap (relatively speaking)... I wouldn't say its wide for real estate stuff, but for almost everything else, it's a great lens!

You can use the 50 in real estate for some detail shots but it is not wide enough for general RE shots, get the 14-24 f2.8 and you'll never look back, I use mine daily for real estate and shoot mostly about 20mm.

Found a great deal on a 14-24 f2.8 and must admit it's amazing. Using it on a job for the first time Monday, can't wait!!! Also got a 50mm f1.4.

It is a wonderful lens, tip to the wise, compose most rooms around 20mm, 14mm is fine for capturing a small space ie shower tile, but for general room use 20mm, it is more pleasing, and less distortion. This is not a limitation of the lens but a common composition mistake made by many interiors/real estate photographers. I use my 14-24 almost daily, I think it is one of the nicest lenses nikon has ever made, it remains the benchmark for real estate photography. Watch out for the front glass, it is a little bulbgantueous...
