First Full Frame Camera!

Hello there everyone! I have been shooting with crop sensor cameras over the last few years, and while they produce wonderful photos, I am glad to have made the jump to full frame by biting the bullet and purchasing (albeit used) a D700!

So far I am still getting used to the controls of the camera, but so far, it seems to be a wonderful camera. Low light and action shots are lovely.

Off the cuff, the controls, handling, and overall dynamic of the camera is very different then my D7100. Cant say for better or worse yet, just different.

Reason I chose the D700 over a D610 was because of the auto focus. I needed something that can focus very quickly, and in low light. It was just the right tool for the job!

Here is one of the first shots I took with the camera! Looking forward to reading. viewing, and learning more!

The D700 is just what it is, a wonderful camera that was until a few years ago Nikon's flagship camera. Since the technology never ceases to improve and companies can only make money if they sell us the idea that the wonderful camera we had is not so good anymore, I hear some people say the D700 is old technology. Well it is, but this doesn't make it a less capable camera. The file size is big enough for a 2x3 feet print, so that's good enough for me. And the high iso is just well.. great.

So enjoy this camera and use it to make pictures. After all, this is what it was made for.

If AF speed and accuracy was your goal you have chosen the right steed.

Mine is so good it is ridiculous.....almost never a miss.

Crazy good, you will love it! Load up the MB-D10 VG with AA and it shoots blazing 8 fps and the AF still never misses....in C mode it tracks like a laser! Move to S for a standing target and boom, right on every time.....

What glass do you have?

If you haven't found these tutorials reading my other D700 thread comments here you go!

Enjoy and please keep posting pics, the 2 you put up here are brilliant.

thanks hrstrat57! I will surely check out the link.

Youre right.... AF is wonderful in this camera. Lightning quick. I notice I have so many more usable pictures than my old camera because the focus is always right on! No need to take 3 or 4 of the same pictures and hope that one of them has perfect focus!

As far as glass, the only FF glass I have right now is the 50mm1.8G and the 70-300VRII. I love the 50, but am pretty dissatisfied with the 70300, as the fall off is poor the closer you get to 70mm. I think my next piece of glass is going to be the 35mm and 85mm 1.8Gs.

Funny that my Nikon 70-300 AF-s VR is fantastic, sharp up to about 280 and focuses fast on D700 and D300. Perhaps there is a lot of variation between copies? I have since picked up a 80-200 AF D F/2.8 but will keep the 70-300 VR for extra reach and easy carry......

Can't say I use it much at 70 mm tho, usually rely on my 35 70 AF D F/2.8 for that......

Here's what Moose Peterson thinks about it!

feel free to bump up the iso with negligible penalty. 400 is nothing for that camera. even outside in the shady cloud I use 1600 without any hesitation.
