Hi all..

What Wide angle lens can you use with the D700 that you can add a polarizing filter to??
I wanted the 14-24mm f/2.8, but you can’t add a filter!?
I plan on using a 24-70 and 70-200 f/2.8 with it, but wanted something wide to add to the group.

Any idea’s !?

Cheers

yer....I got two actually. The 16-35mm f/4 or the 17-35mm f/2.8. Big difference in price, but for wide angle landscape I guess I don't need f/2.8 (which save's me about £1000 !!!)

Decide to go D700 instead of D300, Brian?

I like the looks of the 14-24. Not so hot on the price, but at least it's about 33% cheaper than the 70-200 was :)

Pity it can't use a filter, though. That is an unfortunate problem.

John, why not go for the 17-35 F2.8, then you can use a filter. Its cheaper than the 14-24
The difference between 14 and 17 on the wider end is just a few steps backward. Use your foot as an extra zoom out tool. LOL

I'll be plumping for the 16-35 instead of the 17-35 as I'm not too bothered about f/2.8 for my landscape work/lens. I can't imaging shooting less than f/8 (ish) really.....

John....yer. The D700 just made a little more sense to me. I'm going to spend a little time getting the new glass first, so you never know !!!!, the D700 might actually be a D800 by then!?!? haha

Kind regards guys :)

Well, I've got the 24-70 2.8.. and the difference between 17 and 24 isn't that big, either :)

I think my next purchase is the 85 1.4G, and after that, something ultra wide... so I have awhile to think about it. Because the 85 1.4G is still a ways out. Buying the 24-70, 70-200 and d700 in the same transaction kinda put buying more off-limits for awhile :)

I was also looking at the 85mm f1.4D lens. Is there a big difference between the G and the D ?? (Apart from cost!! ha), but my wide would be the 16-35mm I guess when it all comes to finally being purchased !!

I've done a fair bit of reading, the biggest complaint I've ever heard about the 1.4D is that it focused kinda slow and sometimes hunted around a bit more than expected. I have heard that the 1.4G is much, much faster, and that the corners are sharper at all apertures.

But, I've not had the pleasure to actually use either yet. The 85 1.4G seems to be out of stock everywhere at the moment, don't know whether there's a real shortage, or if Nikon artificially created one :)

It focuses faster because its an AF-S lens. It has an internal body focusing motor. The D version utilizes the screw motor drive of the body. Its slow and noisy at times.
About corner to corner sharpness, It should perform that way considering this is a US$1,700.00 lens.
The much older 85 F1.4 AIs (the king of portraits) was already sharp on all corners.

Hi John, the 24-70 is a normal zoom unlike the 17-35 or the 16-35 which are both wide to normal. The big difference between the wide zoom and a normal zoom is the angle of view. The wide to normal zooms usually has an angle of view of 105 degrees up, while the normal zoom like the 24-70 has an angle of view of 84 degrees at its widest (24mm). So IMHO, I dont think that zooming backward and forward with your feet will compensate with that difference. Its the way the lens was built to achieve that. We were discussing with wide angle lenses when I said that there is not much difference between 14mm on the 14-24 lens and the 17mm on the 17-35 lens.

Excellent point there. Thanks!

Maybe I'll try and plump for the 85mm 1.4G then, not the D.
Still gonna go for the 16-35mm when the time comes.... (well into next year I think!! - unless I get too twitchy and happen sell a limb or something.... hahaha) :)

As an aside, I started off with DX, so had the Nikon 12-24 f4 DX in my stable when I purchased the D700. After reading Thom Hogan's remarks, I tried the lens on the D700. No vignetting wide open from 18-24 mm and very sharp in the center! So now I have an excellent (for my needs anyway) full frame 18-24 zoom with AFS!
