Got a Nikon D700!!

I've had my Nikon D600 for almost a year now and I've been really impressed with the photos and performance. With the work that I do (weddings/events), I rarely go over f8, so I don't really care about the oil/dust issue (but I have cleaned my camera before because I do see it).

Now moving forward, even though I'm really satisfied with the Nikon D600 - I'm realizing that I really need a workhorse camera. Nikon D600 is great for extracting details for group shots, but the D700 is more than enough to cover 90% of my work, with quicker work flow, better body and better AF system.

Price I bought it for was $1,300 CAD and it includes D700+aftermarket grip+8gb CF (to start) and only have around 6,700 shutters!
Just want to share the new addition to the Nikon family and I have a good feeling this will be my work horse camera.

Here's my new (to me) D700 with grip and my 50mm 1.8G

I have had one for 4 years and it is rock solid. The image quality is outstanding. You might look into the Nikon battery grip for it as well. it is more expensive than the aftermarket ones, but it is made out of metal not plastic and is far more durable. It is also 100% compatible with the camera body. It has holders for both AA batteries and the rechargeable Li-Ion one.

If you are so inclined there are replacement focusing screens for it with a very bright microprism center. Like all AF DSLR's the standard focusing screen is not very good at all for manual focusing because they are not very discriminating and the focus indicator in the finder is ok, but it runs off the autofocus system and when the light gets dim, it is useless. Since all I have are MF AI/AIS lenses, it is indispensible for me. You can get it at focusingscreens.com

Thanks! Yea, I'm very excited to use this as my main with D600 for my group shots.

STM, I'll keep it as it is for now since its a different body and still lots to learn to familiarize with it.The after market grip also came with extra battery holders for D700 battery, 6 AA and D3 battery, and It felt pretty solid. I'll look it up in the future though!

D700 does take amazing photos. I won't really need 24mp nef in most scenarios, which makes this combo so practical.

This is really interesting that you got a D600 then added a D700. Congrats on getting a real beauty of a camera! Nice photos of it too.

Great for you! And at a fantastic price, as well.

I purchased a D700 a bit ago and love it. I still find that I'm using my D90 a lot, though. When I've used the D700, it has been fantastic. I expect to use the D700 much more after I get another FX AF lens or two and after more familiarization with it.

STM is spot on about the manual focusing with the stock screen. I plan on ordering a spli-prism focusing screen soon, but am a bit worried about installing it myself.

Enjoy your "new" D700 and keep us posted on how you enjoy it.

I've installed microprism focusing screens on both my 700 and 700 and it wasn't so difficult to do.

Marcel,

After I order mine, do you mind if I stop by for a quick visit? We could install it at your workbench while I happen to be there... ;) Is 1600 miles too far to go to install a focusing screen?

Seriously, did you have any instructions or special tools to accomplish the task?

Sorry about the typo, I meant 7000 and 700. The necessary tools and instructions that came with the screens were adequate to do the job in less than 20 minutes.

What type of CF Cards would you recommend? Or would you avoid? I heard some bad things about Kingston, but only positive reviews on Sandisk and Transcend. Any members have experiences for these cards? Or other recommendations?

Adapter actually sounds like a good idea. At least I'll only have 1 set of cards for both bodies. I might as well try it out and report back :)

Ok, I was reading reviews and unfortunately CF card type 2 won't fit the D700 :(

Tried looking for other adapters, but there's not much and all type 2 ones :(
Darn. Well, time to sell the D700, lol:p That is to bad. Time to go shopping I guess.

You beat me to it. The D700 uses only Type 1 Compact Flash cards. The SD to CF adapters are Type 2, which are too thick to use in the D700.

I have purchased my cards (both CF and SD) from Newegg.com and Amazon.com for great prices. There are other places to get nearly the same prices on the same cards. Some retailers now match prices with online sources, as well. I've used only SanDisk cards, but recently read a review in which the Transcend cards out performed all others in both read and write speed.

And as expensive as some of the really good cards are, they are cheap compared to the price of film and processing.
