Here's a test shot with the D600 and 24-85 vr. I doubted this lens, but owe it an apology!

These are all straight raw, no sharpening or PP. Hand held, 1/160s, f11 (Not a scientific test)

The first is the full image and the three crops are at 100%, equivalent to an image 61/2 feet wide!

I am learning in a great hurry just how good some of the D600's images can be. I took mine out over the weekend, not fully convinced at just how it could handle the different conditions with the 24-120mm. It not only lived up to its new reputation but the lens did what was asked of it too. I have to say though, maybe only with the 24-120mm lens, it gets a little sensitive to changes in light and you may have to make settings changes regularly to compensate. I'm talking clouds etc not just low sunlight (as in sunset). Once the compesations have been made, it's back to business though. The day was foggy in the morning, clearing to a beautiful sunny day by about 8:30 which held until about early/mid afternoon when it suddenly got a bit cloudy,, no real chance of rain though, just clouds and some were a little dark too, then back to blue sky again mid/late afternoon. So a good cross section of photograhic conditions...

The D300 I also took along, seems just that little bit better off in these sudden changes of light and very few changes, if any, had to be made unless things get really dark. To be fair on the D600, it may well just be a characteristic of the 24-120mm/D600 match. I have yet to buy or try another lens on it. I took along a 70-300mm lens but in my wandering, I forgot to use it. There are obviously good times to come...

I'm finding similar results comming from a D5100. The D600 seems more sensitive to light fluctuations than the D5100 and I just have a sense that I am getting more light in.

I haven't yet tried out the kit lens as I'm using a Nikon 50 mm f1.4G as my prime lens. I had thought about buying the Canon 6D as its kit lens is an L lens which, is an equivalent to nikons professional lenses but the specification for the D600 changed my mind. Am I wrong in thinking, Nikon doesn't do the Canon L lens equivalent or if they do, I'm surprised they didn't include it with the D600. If I'd had the money, I'd have gone for the f2.8 24-85 mm lens but that was a good grand more than I could spend - is the kit lens really any good?

The 24-85 is a good general lens, it is not a pro lens as reflected by it's price. Bundling the D600 with a pro lens would make for a very expensive kit, I think they want to draw buyers in with the consumer lens, knowing we will upgrade down the road. I shot bunch of foliage shots with this lens, check the foliage thread I started for examples.
