Malfunction

Hey guys just a few questions . I’m new to the dslr camera world and recently got a Nikon D610 slightly used as a floor model . I’m having a hard time figuring out some things . For some reason the sub command dial won’t change the aperature . I’ve messed with the command settings and so I know that the sub command dial works because I’ve used it to change exposure . But the aperature stays at f16 . And also when I hit the info button , the screen flickers at times to bright then a darker gray color but all the info still shows . Any help would be awesome thanks

Welcome!

As it was a floor model the first thing I would start with is a two button reset. This will get most setting that have been changed back to default.

D600, D610
+/- Exposure Compensation button and
Thumbnail button.

What mode were you shooting in! A,M,S or P?

Thanks ! I tried the 2 button reset but it seemed like nothing was happening . And I was in manual . I will try the 2 button reset again and see if it resets

So the reset worked the screen went blank and came back on . But still no luck with changing the aperature it just continues to stay at f16

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

What lens are you using? Make sure it is a AF lens. Also, is the switch on both the camera and lens set to autofocus?

So I had both the camera and lens set to auto focus I’m using a 50mm lens Nikkor af . I’ve taken a few pictures having to mess with the exposure since the aperature won’t seem to change . But even in a lit room there is bearly any light showing through the viewfinder or at all because the aperature won’t change from f16 . I’m hoping that I’m just doing something wrong and it’s not a camera malfunction

Greg... There's probably 50 different 50mm lens versions. We need the exact model number on the lense's barrel... Does the lens have a "G" in the model number? If does, take the lens off the camera. With the lens OFF the camera, the aperture is fully closed to its smallest opening. On the back of the lens, you should see a small black tab in a small slot... it is spring loaded and should move to the side with minimal pressure... It will only move about 1/8-1/4"... see if moves freely... As you move the tab, the aperture should open and close...

If there's a "D" in the model number... the above applies also... the difference is, there is also an aperture RING... and by turning the aperture ring from F22-F1.8... the aperture should open...

Make sure when you attach the lens to the camera that the White dots on both the camera body and lens are lined up next to each other before twisting the lens a 1/4 revolution in the bayonet mount.

Two button reset does not do everything. Go into the menus and reset the shooting menu and the custom menu. You might as well go into the setup menu and reset your U1 U2 settings too.
To add to what Fred said, if you have a D lens, you need to lock the ring at the highest f#. You would probably get an error though if that were the case. Unless... There is a little known setting in your custom menu to disable the sub command wheel and use the aperture ring instead with a D lens. I just looked it up, its under the f5 menu. You could check that before doing the custom menu reset, just to see.

Gregshoe, if it's an AF-D lens, there might be an aperture lock on the outside of the lens. That will keep the aperture ring locked at the smallest aperture on the lens itself. Even if it is locked, the sub-command dial should work by changing the aperture inside the viewfinder and on the top screen. Like Fred asked, which AF lens is it? AF-D or one without an aperture ring?

If the aperture is closed down while you are looking through the viewfinder, there is definitely something wrong with the lens or the way it is mounted on the camera. The aperture should be wide open at all times, except for when you take the photo. Do what Fred said in post #8.

If you try some other new lenses and it does the same thing, then the malfunction is on the camera.
