D610 Focus Point

On the D610 my selection of focus points through the view finder is limited inside a large box. This prevents me from setting my focus points close to the edge of the frame. In live view the focus point is not limited and can go anywhere, but live view is not feasible to shoot with. Is there a way to not limit the focus points to that small area when not shooting in live view?

Good question.

I've assumed that the view finder is more accurate and that it shows exactly where those 39 points are.

This is the 'official' Nikon explanation Nikon | Imaging Products | Uncompromising performance - Nikon D610

but it does not answer the question of what is happening on the LCD where it seems as if you can put the focus point anywhere at all. I think what is happening on the LCD is that the camera just pics the closest focal point and uses that one. my best guess.

Love to hear from someone who knows.

A lot of people use just one point in the middle and focus and recompose. That can be a little difficult using the shutter button half press and then try to recompose and shoot though. One reason that many of us us Back Button Focus. Fast and easy and better results.

I think the reason for the focus points in the middle is the cross point focus point are more sensitive and they are in the middle
