Well I have had the camera for just over 2 weeks now, and I have done a lot with it so far !!

Already its had its first holiday to Spain:

I then got back to the UK and was invited down to a friends house for a week, he was doing some Lawn Mower racing so I decided its a great time to get the camera out again, I then decided to repay them with a quick photo shoot of the little ones, I love the clarity I get from the fuller frame

Whilst I'm not disputing the quality of the images, do you believe that almost exactly the same couldn't be achieved with a 7100/7200 DX with good glass? In poor light or where depth of field is part of the equation then yes I would agree.

Possibly but I am talking about my personal experience ...

I have came from a D3300 where clarity wasn't too bad but in low light it was rubbish, I had the option of a D600 or a D7100 so I went with the FX body as I only had one DX lens in my bag so that was an easy switch out.

The lawnmower pic is great!

Thanks, I have a few with them with the front wheels off the ground but this is the only shot I was able to get with one fully in the air !!

It it quite obvious to chose the D600. All manufacturer will ensure the higher cost body has advantages. Otherwise how to sell?

I have also just upgraded to a d610 and discover that the AF on my DX lenses will not work. The nearest lens to my 18-200dx lens that I can find appears to be AF-S 28-300 f3.5-5.6 ED VR £660/$1050. Is 28mm on a FX lens comparable to 18mm on a DX. I realise the the image will be equivalent to the old 35m size but I don't want to rush out and buy what is a quite expensive lens to find it not suitable. I just want a lens to cover most eventualities so I don't have to carry multiple lenses and have to change them in the field. Is this the default lens can anyone advise please?

28-300 VR good lens....roughly the same mission as your DX.

I found it heavy and cumbersome tho demo before you buy.

I don't have a D610, this is just idle bystander comments. But the D610 manual (section on Compatible Lenses, see Index) says the D610 AF has compatibility with D, G, or AF-S lenses. Pretty sure that is any AF lens. Those lesser bodies that don't always do AF say they are only compatible with AF-S lenses. My only point is that perhaps this is worth looking into more.

My simple minded first thoughts are that AF can be turned off two ways, the AF switch on the body (under the lens at about 4 O'clock), and many lenses also have a MA-M switch on them (MA is AF, M disables AF). Check those two switches, either one can disable AF.

Would prefer the 24-85 AFS VR and the 70-300 AFS VR to the one 28-300 for same or less money. My son bought that exact kit from nikonUSA on special it is stellar.

My son has used most of my D glass on his D610 as well as my Nikkor 28 Ai 2.8.

the above is correct, you have the full spectrum of Nikkor glass avail !

Sell the DX lens and gear up properly.

Thanks Wayne, yes the AF switch on body and lens are both on. The manual does confirm that a G lens is compatible but it still refuses to cooperate.
The two arrows either side of the focus on light in the viewfinder both come on which means it will not AF. I have retried the same lens back on my D7000 and it works fine.

Something is wrong then, it should work. You might ask Nikon support about it, but they tend to always want the body and lens sent to them for inspection and repair. If in warranty, it won't cost more than shipping. And a FX lens is the best solution. :)

Here are some good thoughts, which is not a solution, but is good things to think about:
Autofocus camera lesson troubleshooting why AF won't work

I would try single point focus in a good light on a subject with sharp lines in it.

Oops, there is that "comment after a link" forum problem again.
