Just bought a Nikon d600!

Just pulled the trigger on a d600 on eBay and wanted to get input on a good budget lens until I can afford better. I was thinking about the Tamron 28-75 2.8. Any thoughts on this camera lens combination?

I haven't tried that lens specifically, but sounds like a good price compromise lens. Not as high in IQ as the 24-70mm 2.8, but then also less than half the cost. Complaints looked to be mostly around barrel distortion when shooting wide, and susceptible to lens flare.

budget - get a refurbished nikon 24-85mm kit lens, less than $400 nikon usa may be less at other shops. most d600 came with this lens and it is still used on my d600.

I went for the expensive 24-70 Tamron 2.8 and adore it. But it was more than double the price - and a big honking lens so can offer no opinion on that lense. I would look hard at the Nikkor 24-85 though, even though it has the "kit lens" label I've heard it is a good lens - almost when for it when debating on the 24-70 2.8. The other one you may want to through into the decision mix is the 24-105 Siggy Artsy lens. Almost bought that one - but it is again much more than the one you are considering.

I did compromise on the longer lens going for the the 70-300 Tamron f/4-5.6 rather than the 70-200mm 2.8 I really really now "need". But the 70-300 is doing the job and doing it very well. I really like it when I'm out and about but want to go a little longer.

Between those two the only other lenses that spend much time on my D610 are my macro's with the kenko tubes, and my little niffty 50 from time to time.

I don't have personal experience on the other lenses mentioned but I can vouch for the Nikon 24-120 f4 being a great lens for the price that it can be had for used / white box / gray market. It is a superb walk around lens with a really nice focal range. Do I wish it was a little faster? Yes, but it's still a good sharp lens wide open.

I bought a refurbed 24-85 for my D600 to have a smallish walkaround lens (when I don't want to lug around the 24-70) and it does an OK job for $375. If you can afford to spend more, you can't beat having a fixed 2.8 (or maybe fixed f/4 in the 24-120). Now that Nikon has announced the VR version of the 24-70, you might be able to find great deals on used non-VR 24-70s.

Huskerfan, congratulations on buying a great camera. I've never used that Tamron before, but 2.8 will really let you take advantage of the great bokeh you can create on a full-frame sensor. If you have any extra $$, the next purchase could be a 50mm 1.8 which is very inexpensive but plenty sharp. Keep your eyes on Craigslist, too, because you can sometimes find some great used lenses there from desperate sellers.

Exactly. Years back, I bought a mint 80-200 2.8D ED for $400 (later sold it for $650) and two years later bought a mint 70-200 VRII for $1400. Total cost to me for a like new 70-200 VRII (with case) - $1150. I love Craigslist, but you have to act fast to grab the good deals.
