D610 flash sync

I understand that the D610 has a flash sync of 1/200.

Please could someone explain whether that should concern me?

Intended purchase, D610 + Speedlight R1 kit. Main flash usage, indoor & outdoor close-up & macro shots.

The only situation where this can be an issue is if you wanted to take a picture of, e.g., a flower, with the aperture wide open to blur the background, in bright sunlight. In such case you might need shutter speed shorter than 1/200 s, or your picture would be overexposed. This is when Auto FP (high-speed sync in Nikon talk) comes useful, as it allows for much shorter shutter speeds with a flash.

But I think D610 with R1 kit can do Auto FP. Can someone confirm this?

Thanks for your reply & explanation.

The spec reads:
Auto FP High-Speed Sync available (with compatible cameras).

I think that the D610 is a compatible camera. Does that mean it would sync faster than 1/200 if needed?

The D610 does offer HSS (the Auto FP menu E1 - HSS is ONLY in play when shutter speed is actually faster)

However, you also need a speedlight that also can do HSS. These include

SB-700, SB-800, SB-900/910, and Youngnuo YN568.
The Internal flash or SB-400 or studio lights CANNOT do HSS.

Here is a write up explaining HSS Auto FP: Four Flash Photography Basics we must know - Auto FP and HSS

Thanks Wayne

A quick question please?

I am aiming to get the R1 kit for indoor & outdoor macro & close-up work. As far as I can tell, the only reason to get the R1C1 kit is if your camera is not CLS compatible. I cannot find out whether the SU-800 unit that comes with the R1C1 kit is better or more flexible than using the camera controls?

I am not the best one, because I don't have any of that kit, just reading the manuals...

Operation with non-CLS cameras requires the SU-800 and the SC-30 cable, because that is not wireless. Page 109.
I suppose it is a timing issue, since the remote flashes have to have their power level set from the commander menu.

With CLS, other commanders can also trigger the R1 kit flashes. The SU-800 does offer a switch inside the battery compartment for what is called Close Up operation (page 58). It has never been clear to me what the difference was. They call it Close Up vs Commander. A lot of the manual talks about Close Up, but they seem not to explain.

The SU800 has more punch than other speedlights in commander mode.
Re commander vs close up mode.... Commander mode can be used for close ups (macro). In commander mode you can choose between TTL/AA/M for each group of speedlights. In closeup mode in TTL you are set the flashses in ratios rather than power settings ie 1:1, 2:1 instead of the EV values available in commander mode. You are still able to keep the ratio the same and alter the overall brightness by pressing the SEL button.

@nzswift

Thanks for your reply. I remember seeing the ratio bar somewhere, maybe in a video. That looked very simple to use. So it appears that I would have a little more control with the R1C1 kit over the R1 kit. As far as I can tell, if I bought the R1 kit initially, I could in the future add the SU800 thereby turning the kit into a R1C1?
