Losing D600 Eye Pieces

About 3 months ago I looked at my D600 and noticed that the rubber eye piece was missing. The camera spends a lot of time on a strap over my shoulder while walking around, and I figure that at some point it rubbed against my clothes and popped off. A little upset I decided that rather than spring $5 for a new one I'd just pull it off the D90 I have sitting on the shelf. Last night I'm sitting on the deck and I look down at it and notice that, once again, the darn thing is missing!! I have to say that now I'm more than a little miffed. This is the DK-21 part that comes standard on all of them, and I've never taken it off on my own to use the ridiculous little cover they give you (I usually cover it with my hands).

Obviously it's not something critical since I don't seem to notice it right away, but I'd still like to have something on there. Anyone else have anything like this happen? The only recent thing I can think of is that while shooting on Sunday with glasses on I seemed to be having some trouble seeing through the eyepiece, which often happens and as always I wound up taking my glasses off. Perhaps it's sticking somewhat to the glasses and pulling up? I don't know, but before I buy something else I have to figure out what the heck is going on.

No problem with mine so far. I haven't tried to take mine off--is there some type of catch on the camera where the piece snaps into place to keep it secure? If so, is the part on the camera broken? If the rubber is sticking to your glasses, the only thing I can think of is to wipe the rubber part with some silicone periodically to keep it flexible and non-sticky. Just don't get any silicone on the viewfinder's eyepiece.

Yep, same here. Lost the first Jake and ordered the Hoodman eye piece and knock on wood it hasn't fallen off yet. The Hoodman seems to have a better locking device/arm on it then the Nikon one. I have had it several months and no issues with it. Funny never had that issue on my D7K, but oh well.

Come to think of it, I have the Delkin Snug-It Pro covering my D610, and it goes over and around the eyepiece. Most likely that is helping to keep mine in place. Prior to that, I never had a problem though.

I have that problem. There's been several occasions that I've actually gone back to a location and searched the ground for that eyepiece. I bought something that I can't seem to find right now for reference. Basically it's an LCD cover and it installs by sliding onto the eyepiece slot. THEN you slide the DK-21 on top of that. Works okay and I don't lose the eyepiece anymore.

i lost one off a d5100, i now have the hoodman's eye piece on my cameras. Hoodman has a "lip" on the bottom of their eyepiece that locks it in place, almost to good. I have ground down the lip on mine so i can remove the eyepiece easily.

I have one of those LCD/Eyepiece covers. It's now in a drawer because I almost stepped on it walking back out of a field along the same grass path that I'd taken on the way in. I use stick-on LCD covers now.

The eyepiece has 2 notches that correspond with 2 rounded dots on either side of the viewfinder, and it clicks into place. Seemed secure at the time. Never came off my D7000 and I used that for almost 2 years before getting the D600. I'm really not looking to invest in a Hoodman, if only for fear that I might like it enough that I need to buy 2 more for my other bodies. I suspect that if I buy replacements I might just stick a dab of a mild adhesive somewhere to help hold it in place given that I never take it off.

I used to have one of those circular rubber eyepieces on one of my F-2's and it too kept coming off without me knowing it. After the second replacement I just said the heck with it and just left the thing off.

I purchased and Eye Cup thingy a couple of months ago cause I heard it helped with eye glass glare. It lasted one shoot and popped off. I havent used it since, but I havent put the stock one back on either. I seem to favor not having one at all.

Update

I suspected this had happened, but never got around to checking for sure until Saturday afternoon when I reached under the front seat of the car, felt around and found the piece that had fallen off. It takes some doing to get it off, but apparently not enough doing. I'm working on a non-glue solution to tighten that fit this week. I'll let you know what I come up with.

I suspect these are not original Nikon, which doesn't bother me so much, but they also appear to be more rubbery than original stock, which might be of issue depending on the quality of the rubber.

Thankfully, I found the one eyepiece in my car, and then when I exchanged the D600 for the D610 I was told to "strip every part off the camera before you ship it", so I have an extra eyepiece (which now goes back on the D90 I stole it from) and hot shoe cover, not to mention another spare battery.

I lost a couple between 5100 and 600, every time by carrying the camera like a sling with a lightweight lens and the eyepiece getting pulled off via simple friction against my shirt. Fresh one I got seems to sit on there much tighter than the older ones I have, so perhaps it will last me longer.

That or a tiny tiny few drops of superglue should remedy this issue.

The thing about super glue is that you might want to take it off to put on the cap for when doing long daytime exposures (God, I wish they'd all have the internal curtain like the D800).

I'm on my third eye piece. Crap design. There's a seller from HK on Ebay that sells them genuine with free shipping for $US10
