First birds of the season - my ducks are back

Since we're officially into springtime, I keep my D7000 and 70-200 at the ready by the patio door in case anything photo-worthy happens in my back yard. Today, my duck couple returned to torment my terriers (and vice versa). Here's my first shots of the season of the mallard taking off from our pool with Skittles watching. Not very good pics due to overcast day and duck flying straight toward me. ISO 1600, 1/1000 sec, f/5.6

I think they are brilliant. The look on the ducks face is priceless.

I guess that's the advantage of a head on shot, you get an "expression". I normally shoot in manual with auto ISO for my duck shots and capture them in a panning motion as they fly across the frame. I'll shoot the next batch with a faster shutter speed and higher aperture. And, I might have sun. It snowed in St. Louis later today after I took these photos. Hope the ducks didn't head back South. :cool:

I've only shot ducks a couple of times, but this has always been my favorite - the 'dancing duck' shot on my D80 about 5 years ago:
