D600 going into dx mode by itself

Hey everyone, I'm stumped on whats been going on with this camera. I mainly use my tokina 16-28 2.8 fx lens with it. Within the last 2 weeks I have seen my camera automatically switch to dx mode on its own  I've tried to go into the options to switch back into fx mode, but that option is grayed out. I have physically turned off the camera and turn it back on at that point it will go back into fx mode. A few shots later in and it will go back into dx mode and then I have to start the process of turning it off again. I also realized it happens in dark settings. Has anyone come across this? I had the camera serviced by Nikon in Melville, NY about a month ago and I believe did a software update. Thanks to anyone who can help.

It almost sounds like the connector plates between your lens and camera body may be a little dirty. Try cleaning the leads and see if it makes a difference.

The default setting for the front Function button is to toggle FX/DX mode, so if you accidentally depress that button while using the rear thumb wheel, you can switch to DX without realizing it. That happened to me, so I went into the custom settings and re-assigned the front Fn button to spot metering. This doesn't explain why your FX mode would be greyed out, but see if that helps before sending the body for service.

I'm pretty sure this was the problem. I just re-assigned the front Fn button. Thanks

This is exactly what happened to me. I never use the fn key, but during a client shoot I must have hit this button by mistake and ended up in crop mode. I could not figure out why this happened. The D600 manual states that the fn key is set to do nothing by default, but this was not true on my camera.

I have since reassigned my fn key so that it now takes me to "My Menu" where I have added the Crop option so that it's listed there instead. This way if I accidentally hit the fn key in the future, I'll go to the My Menu screen, instead of having my images cropped without notice.
