3RD party grips.

had one for a D300, now for a D600, and next for my D900 (notice the trend ;) )

Anyways, for the average joe or even pro a 3rd party grip is great. I know some are scared, suspicious, or nikon loyal fans, but for a plastic part that holds batteries, Id rather save the extra money for better glass. if the price was reasonable, I would opt for the nikon, but not for something costing 8 times more.

I bought this make (different models) for my D3100 and then my D7100. No complaints and very satisfied here.

I had a Mieke Battery grip for my D7000 - it was ok, not the most amazing fit in the world but good enough when tightened properly.

Now a Travor Battery grip for my D600 - Lovely fit! High quality feel! Solid as a rock one problem - hard to get it started on the thread on the bottom of the camera - I'll get used to it though..

That suggests I need to check out the Travor. I agree about the feel of the connection, but if I can get better at a reasonable price I shall as my sling screws into the tripod hole.

I bought a Pixel grip for my D600 in May and it works fine. I've used Nikon grips on my D100 (8 years, great grip) and D7000 (3 years, not so great) and the Pixel works as well as either and looks like OEM.

I did a lot of research before I bought a Zeikos for my D800 as there are always reports of some 3rd party grips causing nightmares. No issues at all. I don't use grips that often, so I haven't bothered with the D600. I have an OEM version for the D7000 that's practically mint with box. I may just sell it some time soon.

I'll just reserve my comments about 3rd party grips to myself. If they work well for you then that's great. Time will tell if you made the right decision or not.

Ironically, I rarely use my battery grips now since I use a L bracket. It is much more secure without the battery grip when using a L bracket.
I use it as the En-EL18 offers so much longer life time, I took mine to work and took photos over a weeks period using 90% onboard flash and it lasted 5days, the EN-EL15 lasted 2 ;-)

I respect your opinion :) if BH and adorama are selling them then I would say they are confident enough to take that burden on their shoulders and not worry about ruining their fantastic rep theyve built over the years. I would prefer to buy nikon, I just see no reason to pay so much. if the price was reasonable then I would have no issue. if it was $120-$150. but I cant understand the reason for grips costing $250+. I remember buying the grip for my N90S way back then for $120 used and I thought that was reasonable. but not $250+.
@scott. that En-EL18 battery is similar to the EN-EL4 for the D3/D3s where I can shoot something like 800+ pics on a charge while the little square one for the D300 (like our D600) cant get close. but with the battery in body and grip I can hit that amount.

The Nikon battery grips are indeed over priced but the generic brands had compatibility issue with my D800E. I tried two of them and both gave me the same problem. The issue was corrected when I purchased the Nikon brand. Your mileage may vary.

I've had nothing but third party grips, and they have worked fine for me so far. But I really want to try to get a Nikon grip for my D300. I may not be able to manage to afford it, but I'm going to try to find a good used one when I can come up with some money! :)

Oh, btw, BE CAREFUL. there are PERFECT counterfeit copies of the MB-D10. I had one. the one I got for my D300 I bought from DX.com and it came in a nikon box with nikon papers and had the nikon rubber logo at the bottom with the sticker on the inside. it was not genuine but I compared it to the nikon orginal and I saw minor differences but it was a good copy of it. just FYI.

MB-D10 Multi-Power Battery Grip for Nikon D300 / D300s / D700 - Black - Free Shipping - DealExtreme

see the last picture of the nikon box. the grip looked like 97.35% of the original nikon grip. I was shocked. just make sure youre not paying so much for a 3rd party perfect clone

With buying used, there is likely no way for me to know if it's a copy. But I will likely post in the wanted thread first in hopes there is someone here with a real one they are willing to part with, at a price I can afford. I'd be asking now, but I just don't have the money yet to pay for one! Lol :)

Thank you very much for the heads up! :D
