D610 Focus Question.

Just wondering what's going on with my focusing on my D610, it seems like in Live View I get a sharper image than focusing through the viewfinder, and it does this with all my lenses. Here are 2 test shots in my home using mirror lock up, do I need to send the camera to Nikon service or wait till FoCal adds the D610 and do it myself?
Thanks.

Have you fine-tuned your lenses? The reason I ask is the viewfinder AF (asymmetric focus) operates on a totally different system than Live View (contrast focus) and lens tuning will have a much larger effect when using the asymmetric focus (viewfinder) than live view.

Hi thanks, no I haven't fine tuned any lens yet as I have FoCal pro and am waiting for them to add the D610, is there a better way?

What lens is it ? I'd give find tuning a shot. My 50mm was pretty far off. Much better after some fine tuning. Give it a shot before you send it in.

Also, it depends on your aperture, and how close you are. Sometimes if your too close, and even using a f22 for example, focus can fall off pretty quick. That 2nd one, the wall looks in focus, so could it be focusing on the wrong thing?

This one is the Nikkor 105 2.8 VR Micro, but it does it with my 16-35 f4 and 24-120 f4, but a little less.

If you are manually focusing and your diopter is not set to your eyesight every lens you put on your camera will produce out of focus pictures. If you are manually focusing look through the viewfinder and adjust the diopter which is the little knob next to the viewfinder until all the numbers and settings showing at the bottom of the viewfinder are clear and in focus and try another shot.

Your kidding right? but what's that got to do with the actual picture after it has been taken? I did not manual focus I used AF, thanks.

No I'm not kidding!!! If you are manually focusing with the diopter off it will mess up every picture you take using the viewfinder. And the way I read your post, you are the one that doesn't know what is going on and ask for help. I won't bother with giving you any more ideas. Hope you figure it out on your own!!!!

Did not mean that in a bad way as I just came over from the canon camp to nikon, canon was not like that, also I was not manual focusing, and yes I am asking for help as Nikon is a new system for me that so far I like better than canon, thanks;)

I am positive it is the diopter adjustment on the side of the viewfinder. My D600 was doing that right out of the box and I had to adjust it to my eyesight and then BOOM clear shots from then on out!!! Check it, just dial a few times while looking through it and it should get clearer when adjusting!!! I agree with grandpaw!

Thanks

The diopter adjustment doesn't affect the AF mechanism does it?

My understanding of the diopter adjustment is like wearing glasses. You can even get a diopter magnifier.

I could understand if he was manually adjusting his focus but he not - he says he's using AF - then the diopter adjustment only affect what you see through the viewfinder but not the actual image the camera produces.

BTW @HotGates - welcome to the Nikon world.

This is going to sound strange, but have you tried turning off AF and taking a photo with each lens using manual focus?

Also, what other camer did you use your lenses on that focused OK?

It seems starange that it out of focus with all your lenses. I my mind it dooes tend to point toward the camera being defect.

Others can chime in - of my two messily lenses - only one has a back focus problem and the other works fine. Has anyone else had to tun their camerra for all their lenses?

Just wondering what's going on with my focusing on my D610, it seems like in Live View I get a sharper image than focusing through the viewfinder, and it does this with all my lenses. Not sure how the diopter adjustment even came up, but your right...

What were your focusing settings? Single or multiple focus points.

Seems the flower is very low contrast and the brick wall behind had more contrast. It is written in the user manual (focusing problems) that when there is a pattern behind the main subject, it is possible that the pattern can cause mis-focus.

That actually sort of ties in with Dave_W's comment about Live View (contrast focus) vs AF through the viewfinder.
