D600 is back home ... again. Interesting repair note

UPS just dropped off the D600 body. Like last time they replaced the shutter, but this time they also have a MOD LOW PASS FILTER entry on the repair details. Not sure what that is, and I doubt I'll be able to find out, but I'll try for sure tomorrow. "MOD" represents modify to me and not replace (which is RPL as seen the line above it), so I'm curious as to just what they would modify.

Anyway, it's back. I'll check the actuation count tonight and hopefully start snapping again tomorrow if this rain lets up.

Good luck Jake. I don't know what it's like over there but you can't actually speak to the techs at Nikon UK. This is frustrating with technical problems like my D800 AF issue.

Would love it if they decided to remove the AA filter, but I suspect that's not it. I did some reading and it's the low pass filter that gets vibrated when the Clean Image Sensor function is activated, so perhaps there's a recalibration of the vibration that's been implemented as well. Makes sense if that function is not working as well as it could/should.

And for those otherwise interested, shutter count bounced up 75 and was not reset. They did reset much of my shooting menu, going back to default file names and adding a new folder, but I suspect that has to do the way each tech operates and how they might analyze and process test photos (standard names, each tech gets their own folder name, shot tethered to a computer and not to a card)?

Busy day, but I have a friend coming over to change the oil in our bikes tonight, so perhaps some bike shots will be in order - though mine needs a bath coming out of a winter in the garage.

I would guess that a modification to the low pass filter would likely have something to do with what make dust stick to it. i.e maybe they used a less 'sticky surface film/substance' or similar, so when dust does get on it it will not stay on it. Allowing the built in dust cleaning system and/or an external blower to have some effect.

Random guess but that is the kind of workaround i would attempt if i was Nikon :)

Geez, I hope this is the final chapter in this sordid tale for you Jake and you can now happily shoot away without any further dramas. Being a bike rider myself, I'm looking forward to your pics :)

Bike?? Bath?? Just take a ride in the rain!!!

Pat in NH

Should have just stuck it outside yesterday, but that probably would have just stuck all the pollen on it. Too much chrome on this one not to do it properly (it was there when I got it - won't be on my next one).

After reading the LPF's connection to the dust cleaning I suspect that's right. I'm hoping I can get a comprehensive answer from Nikon later today.

I've really enjoyed the camera when I've had it. My impetus in getting it to Nikon early is that I don't want to have to be without it through the summer when I'll be doing a lot of shooting. I'm hoping this is the clincher. Time will tell.

I look forward to your findings. Hopefully they really did replace the low pass filter with one less sticky as others have suggested. That would make sense, but I'm curious as to why they would have different filter materials on similar sensors. If/when I send mine in, I should jot them a note saying to please remove it entirely. You never know...

Were you able to contact Nikon today? I'm wondering if they buffed the low pass filter as their modification?

Too darn busy to make calls, and even shoot (bike maintenance nightmare - when did autolight plugs go metric and not tell anyone?!). Believe me, when I know, you'll know.
