D600 Battery Grip Issue

Hi,

I have problems with Nikon D600 "aftermarket" battery grip. When I leave it attached to the camera, after a few minutes it shows that both batteries are discharged. (the camera wont even turn on) I have the battery in the camera and in the grip charged to 100%.
The only solution is to remove the battery tray from the grip, turn the camera on (so it uses the battery from the camera itself) and then reinserting the tray, once I do this I can go check the battery in the menu and both say 100%.... and grip is fully functional all buttons work fine.

Any ideas why is that going on? Or is it a faulty unit?
thanks

I have an aftermarket grip and have NO issues whatsoever. It came with 2 batteries and a charger. Use the Nikon charger for the batteries and use the original Nikon battery IN the grip. I believe the batteries are made from Vivitar. Hope this helps.

I also have a Mieke battery grip in it I use a third party battery and the original battery in the camera.

Had NO problems at all and it all works great :D

See mine is not Mieke, its some no name battery grip, I will return it, maybe I'll try my chances with Mieke.
I would really like to own an original Nikon unit, but with $300 price tag thats not going to happen any time soon :/ and I really like the "heft" feeling with the grip.

Well I had a Mieke grip on my D90 and reviews for that even said it was made better than the Nikon one with some metal parts that were plastic on the Nikon one but I cannot vouch for that as I have not seen the Nikon model. But my Mieke grips both on D90 and D600 are superb and very well put together and they work well

What else do you need ??

You could always put a Nikon sticker on if you like ;)

I think the difference here is that original Nikon's grip for D600 is made from magnesium alloy, and knockofs are plastic but to be honest I don't really care if its Nikon or not, I just care for it to work and I don't have to remove the battery every time I want to use the camera.

I'm in the process of returning this one back, I will order Meike and will post an update on how that one works, hopefully will have no issues.

One thing I did find different from the grip on the D600 and the D90 which is annoying is that on the D90 you removed battery door and battery and the grip plugged into the battery compartment. You then put one or two batteries in the grip and the grip never needed to be removed.... great design

On the D600 grip (and I assume its the same if its Nikon or third party) is you put one battery in camera and one in grip so if you want to charge the one in camera you have to keep removing the grip... stupid design and I think will be extra wear and tear on camera and grip contacts. When you look in grip they have the battery in some stupid elaborate device to hold it when there is loads of room to put both batteries in there... what's that all about :cold:

I have a Vello grip on my D90. I have two batteries in the grip. I never have to remove the grip and just use the Nikon charger on the batteries. The camera reads both batteries and I haven't run out of juice while shooting. Like the added weight; more stable and more to hold on to.

I have a nikon D600 that i bought the Meike Grip for and i thought it would work perfect but it doesnt. My shutter button works, but the dials wont work. The AE button works too. Can it be something to do with the latest firmware. I didnt try it with the old firmware and i cant go back so im not sure if the firmware update killed the 3rd party grips. Any ideas?

Ohh you got me thinking now as I have updated my firmware but I cannot recall trying all the functions on the grip since I did...

I will post an update here a little later when I have had a play

No they are set to function. Do you have a genuine nikon battery in your grip? I have an aftermarket that might make a difference right?

I have the Nikon battery in the camera and third party in the grip...

Is the connections secure and tight between camera and grip?

I have a battery problem too. The batteries that came with the grip used to work. Then I bought some other 3rd party batteries and ever since no 3rd party batteries will work in the grip.
