Got my D600 back from Nikon

Got my D600 back from Nikon this evening. Have not shot anything with it, not have I inspected the inside yet - I want to wait until I have time tomorrow and do it in as clean an environment as possible. But I did want to share with you the work done. No explanation was given as to anything found during the inspection, I simply sent it in explaining about the repeated dust issues.

In the Material Description field of the Repair Invoice it states the following:

Service Repair Bank B1
Write Up
Repair SC201759
*
RPL SHUTTER MECHANISM
RPL REWIND SIDE RUBBER
ADJ AUTO FOCUS OPERATION
CLN LOW PASS FILTER
GENERAL CHECK & CLEAN
GENERAL CHECK & CLEAN
GENERAL CHECK & CLEAN
GENERAL CHECK & CLEAN

I have no idea if the adjusting of the Auto Focus is standard procedure on these types of operations, and I'm assuming the side rubber gets replaced when the camera gets disassembled. Would be curious if anyone else getting this work done had anything different?

Looking forward to shooting with it again tomorrow.

I'm wondering, would they replace the shutter mech just because it may have been over oiled, or there is a physical problem. I'll be interested to read your results.

If the information in another thread is accurate, where it shows shutter mechanisms that appear to have wear that could have produced flecks of paint/coating from the shutter itself contributing to the dust, then I believe that this is the heart of the problem. The D7000s had over-oiled shutters, and I had to clean mine a couple times because blowing was insufficient, but it worked itself out after 15-20K actuations. This would appear to have been producing internal dust on its own. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on my shutter for signs of wear, especially if I start seeing dust again.

Hi Jake - thanks for sharing your experience with the Nikon Service Center. I have sent my cameras before and this is the first time I've seen the shutter mechanism replaced. Checking and adjusting the AF and cleaning the low pass filter appears to be standard before sending it back to the owner.

Thanks for the info Jake. I guess I was lucky because I've only wet cleaned mine once after about the 3000 mark. Since then, only one dry blow and it still looks darn clean.

And for the impossibly curious (like myself) the shutter actuation counter was not reset on the camera. Mine's still at just over 5K.

So far so good, but I've not been out and about shooting a ton of stuff. I just checked it over to make sure everything works. I may take some time today to shoot some handheld HDR stuff that will require high speed bursts, which seems to be what caused the issue early on. If I can get away with fireing off a bunch of shots in rapid succession and end up with zero dust I will be doing the happy dance.

And no, there will not be video. :)

I was wondering whether or not the count would change. Nice to hear it hasn't! I also hope to hear your impressions of Nikon's work!

Thanks for the info, I just wet cleaned mine again. I guess I could take it back to Costco for a third try, but it's a pain. If the dust comes back again in short order I will try and send mine in as well.

How did you go about sending it back to Nikon? Just wondering, as I am going to be doing this (hopefully) in a few weeks. I'm hoping they didn't make you pay for shipping.. but I'm guessing they did. haha.

I have just under 1,500 on my second D600. I have already wet cleaned twice. I just called Nikon and talked to the customer service rep who was actually pretty friendly and helpful. I am waiting to take my camera back to Costco for a third try, but I am waiting right until the end of my 90 days in the hopes of getting an improved model. The rep did say that due to the issues with the 600 Nikon will pay for shipping there and back. Just an FYI for those considering it. He said the turn around time right now is about 3 weeks.
