2x teleconverter

Thinking about getting a Nikon 2x teleconverter to use with my 18-300mm Nikkor lens. I have been told at 300mm I will probably have to use manual focus rather than AF. Does anyone know for sure?

Entry-level bodies don't have good AF modules to begin with. The 18-300 is f/5.6 at the long end. With a 2x converter, you're now down to f/11. If you're not shooting in broad daylight, the AF module is going to probably fail to function.

Super-zooms usually are terrible with TCs to boot. I wouldn't recommend it.

For a little more than the cost of a couple of Nikon teleconverters, you can get the Nikon 200-500 f/5.6. I know it's a significant increase in money spent, but it's worth it if you really want/need a long telephoto that doesn't cost more than a used car. :)
