Flash Problem

Using an external flash on the hotshoe.
When you put the flash on the hotshoe BEFORE turning the camera on, the flash will not work.
When you put the flash on the hotshoe AFTER turning the camera on, the flash will work as normal.
Any comments?

I put my flash on before turning on the camera and it works fine. I have a d7100 and a SB800. What flash are you using and have you tried another flash.

I've used Nikon, Yongnuo and Godox hot-shoe flashes a D5300, D7100, D750 and D850 and I've never encountered what you're describing.

I was taught to work from the top down - meaning put the flash on the camera while both are off. Once mounted, turn the flash on first then the body. When it's time to turn things off, do it in the reverse direction (body gets turned off before the flash). I've never encountered this either.

Remember I am talking about the D5500. All my other cameras are fine.

Like Paul says... that's not normal behavior. Bear-in-mind, it doesn't make any difference which Nikon model you have... Nikon hasn't changed their flash functionality in many years... It isn't like they re-create "flash" from scratch between each new model. They just basically cut& paste the "flash" and associated code with new models unless there's some earth shattering new way to do flash in the industry... and there hasn't been for many years now...
