Time lapse video

I know that the D5500 has interval timed shooting. Can the resulting images be viewed as a time lapse video in camera or do they require other software?
In other words can the D5500 produce time lapse videos without any external software?

I use a program called PhotoScape. It is free and will turn your interval timed shots into a video (GIF). Works well.

Another option is Windows Movie maker

I am on a mac and use Timelapse assembler for basic timelapse, otherwise I use LRtimelpase, Final Cut Pro, and iMovie
