How to enable back button focus and disable focusing with shutter button

Hi all,

I assigned the AE-L, AF-L button to activate focusing on my Nikon D5500, but I can still focus using the shutter button.
I would like to know if it was possible to use the AE-L/AF-L button to set focus only and the shutter button to take photos only.
Thanks

Seems like you did something wrong, from the manual: f2: Assign AE-L/AF-L Button set on AF-ON initiates autofocus. The shutter-release button can not be used to focus.

That is how it works on my D7000.

I have followed exactly the manual's instructions, i chose AF-ON and despite this, i can stil focus using both, AE-L/AF-L button and shutter button

On the d7200, they snuck in an additional setting for bbf, menu A4 needs to be set to AF-On only. I looked for something similar in your manual, but I came up the same a Vincent: setting the back button to AF-on should stop the shutter button from focusing. Make sure its set properly. Is it really focusing or are you hearing something? Make sure you are not mistaking lens VR sound for autofocus sound.
Maybe some d5500 owners will chime in.
