I am struggling to decide between two lenses. I dont see a reason to get both. Which lens do you like better on the D5300? (I do have the upgraded firmware C: 1.03 L: 2.00)

SIgma 18-50 F2.8-4.5 OS HSM

Or

Nikon 18-55 AF-P

I have heard that with the new 1.03 firmware, Sigma lenses need to be calibrated?

I cant try them out first. This will be an online purchase.

I mainly shoot indoors. Jewelry products I make to sell, pets.

I have no experience using the Sigma 18-50 you mention but have just ordered a used Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 OS HSM. Reviews I read for this lens have been very good and I would think the fixed 2.8 aperture and slightly wider 17mm would be significant advantages over the f2.8-4.5 version.
I haven't looked into the price differences or direct comparisons but thought it might be another option to consider.
I have the non VR Nikon 18-55mm kit lens and have never been impressed by its performance. I believe the later versions are a bit better though.

You can order a Sigma lens dock which is used to calibrate the lens independent of the camera. But wait until you have tested the lens before buying the dock as that particular lens might be ok.

I'm not sure this lens is compatible with the Sigma dock. It appears to be an older AF lens that might be discontinued. Do you know how rosycreates would be able to find out other than contacting Sigma?

How would I go about Calibrating the lens if needed?

I have a Sigma 50-500 that I took to a local camera store. I called and they said they would charge I think $25 to do it. I took it there and since my lens is older and discontinued, they couldn't find the firmware to update, as I kinda suspected, because it is older. Call reputable local stores and make sure you know the exact details of the lens, they should be able to tell you. You can also find the calibration docks on ebay, also probably the local store as well. My local store was about $60 if I remember correctly, and ebay is about $40 or $50, plus possibly shipping.

I did decide to buy the Nikon AF-P lens. Not sure the Sigma is worth all that trouble.

Uh-oh! I didn't think to check the compatibility of the Nikon AF-P lens with your D5300. According to this Nikon Compatibility Chart, that Nikon lens has limited compatibility with your body. Unfortunately I don't see a footnote for the * that explains what the limitation(s) might be. Is anyone familiar with how the AF-P lenses work on the D5300?

*1 on there says, "The camera does not offer the "Manual focus ring in AF mode" custom setting for enabling/disabling focus ring operation in autofocus mode."
I just checked my 5300 with my AF-P 70-300 and I can manually adjust it, and I think it is in AF mode, as I half pressed the shutter release and it focuses as well. I very well could be misunderstanding the "note" terminology from Nikon though. I updated to the latest firmware a month or so ago, whatever version that was.

Thank you guys!

I will report back on how it functions on my d5300. It is due to arrive Friday.
