I just bought a new to me D5300 with the Nikon 18-200 VR I lens from facebook. I got a really good price for it. ($300)

So, before I upgraded the d5300 to 1.02 (it was on 1.00), the nikon 18-200 lens seemed to be working (I only had to use MF 25% of the time). Now, its not functioning normally...I cant get AF to work all of the time (I have to manually focus 75% of the time) and it seemed to be ok before the upgrade.
I tried calling Nikon Customer Support. But, they are only open m-f.
Is there a safe way to downgrade the firmware back to 1.00??

auto focus will not lock on a subject. I have to use MF.

Oh, and I bought them both for $300. Looking around Ebay, I'd say that was a good deal since most of the d5300 bodies are about $300-$400.

The seller is willing to take them both back and give me a refund. But I really like the d5300.....should I keep it?

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the ride.
We look forward to seeing more posts and samples of your work.

I agree with Fred. I suspect either the camera or lens has an issue (which may account for the low price). With this camera/lens combination, even having to use MF 25% of the time raises a red flag. Do you have access to another lens and/or camera so you can test both items? If you are a photography student, you should be able to borrow one or both of these items.

I did go to the camera store out here earlier today. A camera rep checked them out and said the lens is the issue.

I have been playing with it throughout the day. The AF just wont lock on and there is a weird sound coming from the lens when trying to AF....

I also contacted the seller. He is willing to take the return and issue a refund. But, he wants both returned.

Sorry, I am not a student (I changed it). I am a newbie!

well, now the AF is doing this weird hunting thing, with a clanky noise while its hunting...I do believe it is the lens!

I also think I may go back to the photo store on Monday (closed on Sunday) and see if I can try out another lens to make sure the camera is functional, which I do believe it is.

This is very frustrating and disappointing.

I have a 5300 and had an issue with the auto focus after I had been taking many pictures! There was a few specs of dust on the exterior lens, and as soon as I cleaned it, no more issues! As far as the 5300, I really love it! I am far from an experienced photographer, it's my opinion. I just got a D610 a few days ago, so the 5300 will now be my backup. Knowing what I know now, I would keep them both, even if the lens is bad, as I bought mine for a good price and saw what they were going for as well! If I were in your shoes, without experiencing the camera like I have, I probably would return them, if it is a bad lens. You could sell the lens for parts, or display it on a body in your living room, lol. Possibly see if you can get another great deal on a 5300, I dunno. Something I thought of as well, I use spot focus/metering, and have had issues with that, not focusing. Try the other metering options, that may help.

Ok, so I went to the photo shop. The VR is not working. As for AF, it is. It was on Back Focus so I couldnt use the shutter to lock focus. I didnt know that! The lens focuses fine.

I'll be keeping the body and just buy another lens.

Thanks all!
