taking long exposure pictures

With a D5300, you can use the time mode or bulb mode. Set the camera to (M)anual mode and slow the shutter speed down to bulb or time. Bulb mode holds the shutter open as long as the shutter release is pressed as long as the battery doesnt die. Release the shutter button to end the exposure. The time mode allows the exposure to begin by pressing the shutter release button and ends when it is pressed again- up to 30 minutes. I suggest getting a shutter release cable to minimize the shake created by pressing, holding and releasing the shutter release button. Hope this helps.

What time of day/night will you be taking photos? If it is during the daytime, you might need to use some type of neutral density filter. That will allow longer times without blowing out any images.

The d5300 is capable of using the ML-L3 remote. It is a nice and inexpensive accessory to prevent camera shake.
Don't forget to cover the viewfinder if there is any light behind the camera. Significant stray light can leak in and affect the image.

If the D5300 has a shutter delay, you can set it so that the camera stops shaking before the image is taken if using a set length of exposure rather than bulb mode.

i want to take pictures in the dark and introduce color lighting. I also am interested in "ghost" photography, when the shutter is open a person is in the shot only half the time.

Where would you connect a shutter release cord?

Sandi

It should connect on the opposite side of the body from where the memory card goes. Look for a small door.

This is the Nikon brand shutter remote cord that is compatible with the D5300 although there are aftermarket brands out there that are also very good. Just make sure a cable has the MC-DC2 connection on the end. Some other bodies take a connection that has pins on it.
