Hi Nikonites,
Iam a beginner and have used mostly the kit lens and a Nikon 1.8g 50mm prime for my photography.
Recently I purchased a Tamron 28-75 mm from ebay and I can't get it to auto focus. It came without an AF-MF switch and doesnt AF at all.
I am not sure if it comes that way out of the box or not and if it does then is there any way I can change the camera settings and get it to auto focus.
If not, what is my best bet on getting a non-Nikon 24-70 or 28-75mm?
I am on a tight budget.

The D5300 has no internal focus motor.

Some of those particular older Tamrons need it to drive their focus screw.

Here is a random lens I googled.
Nikon 10.5mm DX Fisheye Review
Scroll down the page and look at the mount with the red arrow pointing to a screw. If a lens has that screw, it will not autofocus on your camera. Check your 50mm lens. It will not have that screw. Lack of that screw means the lens has a built in motor.
In the past, the focus motor was in the camera body. It drove the lens through that screw. Then they moved the motor to the lens and made lower cost bodies without motors. The higher end bodies still have a motor and they can use either style lens. So if a lens has that drive screw, it is an older lens that needs camera drive and it wont auto focus on your model.

Does your lens have a "Lock" control switch? Does it have a screw drive as shown in picture below? Does it have only a few electrical contacts? If so you have the older version lens without an internal focus motor. This lens will NOT autofocus on your D5300. Sorry to say so, but "you have been screwed!:unconscious:"

I have a Tamron 28-75 2.8 and it has a motor in it. I have to believe that must be an older model. It is an AFFORDABLE 28-75F/2.8 IF MACRO. It has Auto focus with a built in micromotor. Amazon has it for $499. Some older versions do not have Auto focus. You have to check the specs to be sure it has a built-in Motor. I use DP REVIEW a lot to check lens specs.

Here is the link on DP Review. https://www.dpreview.com/products/tamron/lenses/tamron_28-75_2p8_di
Looking at the link they added the motor to the lens in mid 2008.

By the way... welcome to the forum.
