First Welcome to the forum. Can you describe the steps you are taking to try to connect to your phone Wifi? If you have an HDMI cable or USB cable connected, WiFi will not work. It is also only available if you have an SD card in the camera. I have really never used it, but I have tried it with my iPhone just to see if it works.

Thank you :) I went Wi-Fi under setup menu and enabled the Network Connection. Though it shows ON but not shows the message- "Waiting for Connection." and the small wifi antenna blinking icon. With WMU in mobile I couldn't find d5300's wifi. My camera is not HDMI cable or USB cable connected and has SD card inserted....

Are you trying to connect to an Android or iPhone? Do you have the Reference Manual for the D5300? The steps and cautions are located around pages 170-175. I don't remember exactly, but I know it is in that area in the reference manual. If you don't have the reference manual, you can download it from the Nikon site. It beats the manual that they send you with the camera 10X over.

Once you have the Wifi enabled, then you need to drop down in the menu to SSID or PIN depending on which device you are trying to connect to (Not sure on the exact menu item name, but I think I am close. Trying to do this from memory right now.) Then you need to go to your device (iPhone or Android) and look for the camera SSID or Pin to connect.

What are you trying to do?
Do you have the Wireless Mobile Utility app on your phone/tablet?

All i use the WiFi for is to use the remote shutter release (live view). I cannot afford the $10 wireless trigger right now (between jobs)

You can use it to transfer pictures from the camera to your phone or tablet, so that you can share them with friends immediately, but I don't travel much, so that doesn't come up.

Here is the link to the REFERENCE Manual.
Nikon | Download center | D5300

Use the search feature on the PDF download.
Don't forget 'wi fi' has a space in the middle when searching.

And if you are new to this camera, apparently the GPSr needs periodic maintenance via this link:
Nikon | Download center | A-GPS Update File

On my d7200, I turn on camera wifi. Go to my android phone, run app. Click on radio symbol in app. that brings me to my phone's wifi screen. I select the nikon-[big long name] wifi network, then head back to the app and I think that's it.

@cwgrizz is right on the money. Once you've enabled wifi on the camera, you need to use your smart device where WMU is installed and first connect to the camera's SSID and then launch WMU. The camera doesn't connect to WMU, it's the other way around, but the app expects that the smart device is already connected before launching.

Hi guys..I do all that but when I connect my phone to the camera I get a message says camera has no internet connection..I have an android phone..thanks

My iPad finds the camera.
It connects well.
I can take photos using the iPad.
I go to view the photos.
I select one or I try to see one image.
The app says the camera got disconnected.
Start again.
The same.
After several months of this I decided to sell the camera.

Sorry to hear this, but I hope you find another camera that works better for you.

I had trouble with my d5300 connecting to my android, but not my iphone (after months of successful connections). The phone says it's hooked to the camera, but the camera says it's not hooked to the phone......after hours of fiddling....I turned on Airplane mode, then while still in airplane mode turned back on only the Wifi and it worked fine.

I had the same problem with my D5300 using an Android Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. I originally tried using Nikon owners manual instructions with no luck. I found that after I reset the phones network settings it acquired the cameras SSID and connected immediately to the Nikon WMU App with no problem. I am not sure if I will have to do it again. Phone connected back to my regular WIFI after putting in the password with no problem.
