pics damaged on transfer?

I have just transferred about 30 pics from my 5300 to my portable by USB cable. About 15 were damaged and their file
size shows as approx 1,000,000 whereas a jpeg is about 25,000. The rest are a normal size and are OK, and 3 were mixed in with the giant ones.
I moved them instead of copying them, so the source files are gone Won't do that again.
It was a new 8gb SD card

I save both raw and jpeg formats.

Any ideas?

STOP

The files are still on the SD card, but you will need some software to recover them.

Edited to add: Don't do anything with the SD card until you have a chance to recover the files. I use Rescue 3 for such stuff, but there may be some free software that will do it. Someone may chime in with some options.

Correction: Data Rescue PC 3 and it appears to be available on CNET.

Thanks eyelight. Can you suggest some, I use windows vista.

I added some notes on the first reply. I had a hard drive fail 2 years ago and bought the box version at one of the office stores. I scanned all my SD cards and USB drives working to piece together lost files. It amazed me how much it would pull. Basically, if the file space has not been written over, the whole file will still be there. It works by first making an image of the drive and then uses the image to recover.

Maybe the files are in raw format, hence the size and not be able to open them. Try importing those "damaged" photos in lr, see what happens

HI,

Thanks for your posts.. I am going to try this later today, after I get a new card reader. I have unfortunately shot four pics before I read you post, but we will see!

Bets regards

Thanks for all your help. I bought a card reader, downloaded Recuva software, and I have all the pictures bar [bar two].

Snag with downloading Recuva was that it seems it came with another unwanted bit if software called ReImage - which I hope I have deleted!

Best regards

Nick

I regularly use USB cable to transfer my images from the camera to the PC. Never had any problems with any of the cameras. Till date I must have copied 30,000 images.

One golden rule of computers is never delete till you are sure that the copy is perfect (that means never MOVE, always COPY). Another fact to remember is that DELETE command just deletes the Directory listing, not the file, and as you have discovered these files can be easily recovered, unless you over write them. So in case of any sign of data corruption, just STOP and disconnect the drive to prevent further damage, till you can run recovery software.
