Firmware update for different models

Hi guys,

I`m new to DSLRs so here is my first question on the forum.

The current firmware is C 1.00 and L 2.00 and I see the D5200 has a release for C 1.02.

Will this update suit the 5300 as I believe they are basically the same camera, or should I only ever install anything specific to the 5300?

Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy, and welcome to Nikonites....personally, if it were my camera, I would NOT install anything that didn't specifically mention my model of camera. Good luck, and try to be patient. Heck, you might already have the same firmware in your camera, but with different nomenclature.

I'm not sure if it would accept the update if you went through the motions, but I would definitely NOT try it. Only install updates for your specific model.

They're similar, but not the same camera, and I'd very much doubt if they take exactly the same firmware,

Note that the D5200 has been out longer than the D5300, meaning it's had more time for bugs to be discovered, and firmware updates to be released to fix them. It only stands to reason that the current firmware update for a D5200 would have a higher version number than the current one for the D5300. To whatever degree the cameras are the same, and reflected in the firmware, it is likely that the 1.00 firmware for the D5300 is the same as the 1.02 firmware for the D5200. Any fixes and enhancements that were made by firmware to the D5200 and which were relevant to the D5300 were probably already included in the very first version of the D5300's firmware.

On the other hand, my F2 is over forty years old, and Nikon has never released a firmware update for it. I suppose the the fact that the only electronics of any kind that it contains is a simple analog light meter, and the flash-synch contacts may have something to do with the lack of any firmware upgrades; what do you think?
