HDMI output problem

Whenever I connect my D5300 to a monitor via HDMI, the image disappears after a few seconds. I have tried three cables, all the same. Is there a way to tell if the HDMI-out plug has a defect?

Does it come back when you push the review button again? If so, I think the monitor is just timing out. I'm not sure if there is an option on the 5300 to set that value to longer, but I know the D7000 has the option in the custom menus.
