HDMI out @24 fps?

Hi there, I've got a d5200 on the way and I'm curious about something. I've read an article about an issue, and I'm hoping I can clarify with a knowledgeable user, as I've heard conflicting reports.

I'm interested in using my d5200 to record 1080p video @24fps using the HDMI out to an external recording device such as the Atomos Ninja 2. One article I read said that the camera refuses to deliver clean HDMI out at a frame rate other than 29.97, and yet another article confirmed this issue but stated that there was a workaround which involved recording to SD card first and that somehow prevented the camera from going back to NTSC defaults, but only delivered 720p? I dunno, the articles I was reading were a bit old, so maybe these are issues that have already been addressed in firmware updates?

I'm really just hoping someone here who has the hardware in hand can give me a little clarification.

Can you record 1080p video @ 24 fps to an external recording device via HDMI out?
If so, can you please explain any steps to accomplish this? If not, can you explain if you think this is a bug in the firmware or a physical limitation of the device itself and if you think tweaking of the firmware can produce the desired results.

Thanks for your time!

Edit: to clarify, the reasons I want to do this with an external recording device versus SD cards is I've heard some not so great things about the on board codecs and how they (mis)handle video compression. Obviously, HDMI out to an atomos would produce a higher quality video, right? Another reason to use an external recording device is for better audio recording and to avoid swapping out cards every twenty minutes. If I'm going about this all wrong and am making this a more complicated scenario than it needs to be, please let me know!
