hi folks, not been here for a while but starting to get back into using my d5200 hopefully.
is there a setting where you can have the histogram showing in live view while composing a photo?

i know how to show the histogram after taking the photo, but it would be very useful to see it before taking the photo and hopefully having the exposure correct.

been looking at bridge camera again and seen one showing the histogram in live view, so you would thing a dslr would have the ability to do the same.

cheers guys, shame it doesnt have that as a feature, would be handy for a novice like me.
wish this camera lark was so much easier to learn.

I guess I was just suggesting that it's no big deal to take extra pictures, as a way to evaluate the final picture setup. To check the lighting, or the exposure, or the histogram, or whatever the concern... Then fix it if necessary, and do it again. It's not like film where we had to wait to get it developed, and then return to the scene to try again. :) Digital is a powerful tool, so while we're there, just check it, and fix it, and do it up right.

take the shot, check the histogram, if you like it ok, if not delete it or fix it in post. the histogram is just a tool, just like the "AUTO" setting on your camera. take lots of pictures, your brain will learn.

Being able to see the meter should be enough when you're shooting. If you're in Live View than I suspect you're not shooting anything that requires immediacy (sports, birds in flight, etc) so squeezing one off, checking and adjusting is probably enough. The only camera I've seen with it (not that I was looking for it) is my Sony a6000, and even there the display with it actually replaces the image temporarily, so it doesn't do both simultaneously and is just as inconvenient as squeezing a shot off.

This is one of the features where many of the mirrorless cameras excel. For instance, the X-T1 can show a small overlay as seen below which I find useful.

that is exactly like what i had seen ed, thought it would be a useful guide for me, but like hippie suggests the exposure meter is probably as useful to watch, not sure if i can see the meter in other than manual mode though ?

thanks guys for replies. :fat:

I have the histogram showing regardless of the focus mode.

i can view the histogram after every image in whichever mode the camera is set to, what i was trying to say was, does the exposure value meter show in modes other than M, ie; A S modes ?
i will have to get the camera out to try and look i think.
