Basketball Photography Questions

I have the 18-55mm lens and I usually take photos of basketball outside, but my friends' games will be in a gym and the lighting will be very different obviously. I've always used sports mode but it takes up so much of my memory just to get those mid-air shots. I was wondering what other modes you guys would recommend and what the settings should be and should I invest in a better lens? Is a tripod necessary too?

Hi Toni

I think that you would appreciate a longer lens for those types of shots. What sort of budget did you have in mind?

A couple of questions. What do you mean by sports mode using up too much memory? The file sizes shouldn't change between modes or exposure settings, only file size settings.

Indoors you will need a strong flash, or a very high ISO setting.

I meant that I have to hold the button down so that I dont miss the mid-air jump and it takes several pictures doing so. The highest ISO is 1000, is that good enough

Which camera model are you using? 1000 ISO is actually very low for indoor sports photography without a flash.

If you are filling up your memory card too quickly you can shoot in JPEG format rather than RAW, or you can get a memory card with high capacity, which is pretty inexpensive these days.

This is a good deal on a refurbished 55-200 and it does come with a one year warranty.

I have bought from them several times and could not be happier with a company.

Also you really should never shoot with flash in a sports event. It is very distracting to the players and in some places it will get you kicked out of the event.

Yeah I'd never use flash, but thanks for the site. That's a good deal.

The ISO goes to 6400 on the D5200. Depending on the lighting in the gym, you could be okay.

BTW, I agree that a flash is a bad thing in a real sports event. If you are just doing casual shots of pick up games, you could probably get away with it if the players don't mind.
