I am completely confused at to how to set the camera to shoot video. I've managed to set the menu settings but don't understand where to set the Mode Dial. Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks

I don't have an actual D5200, and the models are slightly different. But the D5200 User manual page 51 Recording and Viewing Movies suggests modes A, S, P or M will work.

I'd suggest camera A or P modes.

In A mode, set the aperture you want to use, BEFORE starting the recording. That will use standard 1/30 second, and whatever Auto ISO is necessary. Wider aperture will use lower ISO. This ISO value should show on the rear LCD.

Just set the camera the way you would set in A,S,P or M mode to shoot a photo and the same settings will apply to your video footage. Remember that any picture controls (Sharpening, Contrast, Saturation, etc.)will be applied to your video the same way they would be applied to your JPG images from the camera. Also, remember that you cannot change aperture in live view mode and that video is always shot in live view mode.
