Nikon 5100 accessories

1) REMOTE - Does the 5100 come with a remote control? I don't recall seeing one, but wanted to confirm before buying one. Ref:
Nikon ML-L3
Wireless Remote Control
2) POUCH - In addition to my grab-n-go Lowepro 160 case, I also have an old Pelican hard case which I keep most of my lenses in when at home. I am looking for some soft small cloth pouches for my older legacy lenses. I know there is a Nikon CL-0715 Soft Case , , however they have the wide padded base which is much wider than the lens and takes up a lot more storage space in a bag than the lens alone. Does anyone sell pouches without that wide base? I am trying to avoid the plastic baggies I now use!

Happy New Year!

I can answer the remote question. It does NOT have a remote. It does have a set timer mode that allows 2, 5, 10, 20 second intervals after pressing shutter release.

I know that LensCoat (www.lenscoat.com) sells pouches in various sizes from X-Small to X-Large-Wide.

The D5100 does work with the ML-L3 remote. See page 28 of your manual for selecting the proper release mode.
The 5100 has two IR sensors (one on the front and one on the back) I have the D60 (which has only a front IR sensor) and have found that the ML-L3 is a little shaky operating in direct sunlight unless I'm almost directly in front of the camera.

Not sure about dedicated pouches - but I have found a good pair of socks (well one from the pair, or even doubled up) can make a soft tight fitting pouch, and cost far less too!!

Many thanks for clarification on the remote.

Using a sock - finally a use the missing individual black socks - gotta try that one!

Question on hard Pelican cases - when doing the custom cutouts for placing lenses in Pelican cases, does one typically:
-cut just to accommodate the lens (with caps) alone? or
-cut to accommodate a pouch (with that wide base)? or
-cut to accommodate a sock/baggie?

They use pelican cases here where I work for shipping of systems.
The Foam Fill is made up of a lot of little half inch cubes stuck together. You just rip out what you want to make room for.

You can also get the case with the velcro strip dividers like those in the normal camera bags.

Thanks. Re the cubes. correct...I was asking more about what people normally do in terms of just putting the lens in the case ( and plucking cubes to fit accordingly) .. or do they use a pouch as well ( and pluck a few more cubes accordingly to allow for the wide base on some pouches)

I keep mine in Nikon hard cases which I then throw haphazardly in my little bag. I'm all about hard lens cases. Every camera lens that I have ever seen that was kept in a hard case is always in excellent shape. Same goes for camera bodies that are kept in neverready cases. I don't use those however because a) I don't have any and I don't think they make them for DSLRs and b) they don't call them neverready cases for nothing! :)

ML L3 works well ... Remember to cover the eye piece if you're gluing to take long exposures though

Question on the Pelican foam

Ok, so I got my replacement foam kit and am ready to pluck away to fit the shape I want. I know the cubes are pre-scored, so its easy enough to work in two dimensions ( width and length) ....but how does one get the desired depth?? The foam does not appear to be pre-scored every half inch vertically, So does one pull out the entire depth of the foam, and manually cut the desired depth o size with a scissors, to fill in the holes as needed??

You should be able to pull them out one little cube at a time. Get your overall layout set up and work one layer at a time making sure things fit. Remember that it's easier to take another batch of cubes out if your opening is too small than it is to put them back if you pull out too many.

When you get the project finished, be sure and take a few pics to show us how it came out.

The foam I have does not have any scoring horizontally (at half inch depths( so its really hard to only pull out cubes to a certain depth/layer, so one cube at a time didnt quite work. What I ended up doing was removing cubes for the area I wanted, for the entire depth.... which made the task very fast, and ended up working out fine ; I didnt even have to fill in the bottom to raise the height.

I have the Pelican 1400, which is a fairly small case, but enough room for 4 small lenses (three shown), one larger lens, plus several accessories. (My camera body plus a fifth lens are kept in my grab'n'go bag).

Config is below. White area are labels so I know which lense is which. It's not perfect (could have likely got one more large lens in there), but its good enough for now. )

Ideally velcro dividers would be better still, but I could not find any for the 1400... and the foam was only $20. I did see velcro dividers for other larger cases ( in the $60 range) but I dont know if they would even be workable in the 1400. I tried to make some on my own but that was a disaster. Perhaps there are some generic ones for sale somewhere that fit the 1400. Again, for now, the foam is good.

I am not sure whether it will be right to post it here ... but I want to upgrade from point and shoot Nikon L120 to DSLR. I went through the Nikon website ... and under D5100 ... under the related products tab ... I found onlu two lens ..... so is it that the other lens are not supported by D5100 ?

After all reading in the internet what I felt it's the glass which has more impact on clarity of the picture than the body ... so I was just wondering whether the other lenses are not supported by D5100.

Thanks.

The D5100 will support a very wide range of lenses, similar to the 5000, 3100 & 3200. The entire Nikon line of AF-S lenses will work and will auto-focus. Other Nikon (& 3rd party lens) will also work with manual focusing.

I do not believe that you will have a shortage of options as many others here with a D5100 can attest to.

Good luck and enjoy your Nikon, whatever version you get.
