Issue or some setting

Hi Guys,

I bought a D5100 two days back. Everything seemed pretty fine to me initially, but last night when I was trying to click moon, I saw an reflection or image just below moon. (I was using 55-300 mm lens manual mode ) Now I tried clicking bulbs or lamp post and I see the same result. I am not sure if this is some setting error or camera issue.(the behavior is there with my 18-55 mm lens too)

Another observation is that this occurs only when I try clicking through eyepiece and it doesn't get captured in photo.
Or if I am shooting in live mode looking at my LCD then also I am not seeing any image.

Please let me know if this is something wrong with this particular camera or some setting error or something which you all have seen and know the reason for.

Thanks

Ashwini

No there's nothing wrong with your settings or anything...
i shoot the moon quite often with the same setup as you & there is ALWAYS a second moon image...
It's very much like the lens flare when you are clicking pics directly facing the sun..
I haven't found any solution except for fixing with PP...
the lens hood doesn't help either cos you would would be directly pointing at the moon & the hood makes no difference

@Alan:
It doesn't get captured in the pic.....I can only see it while looking through eyepiece!!
Thanks

@WhiteLight:
So this should be visible with all D5100 i guess?
Could you please let me know what's "PP"?
Thanks

Not just the D5100, it happens with any camera when you point directly at a source of light.
Check this thread out - http://nikonites.com/d5100/7359-orange-spots.html
There are numerous others on this forum & on the net with the same issue.

'PP' basically means Post processing..
Use any PP software like Photoshop or GIMP or any other to remove these flares.

It doesn't get captured in the pic?? Are you sure?

Just one question Ashwini, could you be, by any chance wearing eye glasses when looking through the viewfinder? You could be seeing the light source reflected back on your glass to the viewfinder and back. Try it without the glasses on and let us know.

Enjoy your Nikon!

@Whitelight:

Thanks for the link on orange spots, but there is a difference that these orange spots gets captured in photogrphs but in my case when I am trying to click say a lamp post(from a distance, not zooming upto lamp post), I usually see a slightly displaced image of the bright portion of lamp post, which is not there if I capture through LCD or it is not there in photograph either.

So I really think that it is through the reflector with in the camera which is responsible for putting up the image on eye piece. But my concern is whether this observation is in general with all d5100 or is it just my camera.

Thanks

@Marcel:

Yes Marcel, I wear specs when I am taking snaps. But I got this behavior confirmed with one of my friends who doesn't wear specs.
And I tried taking pics after removing specs but still the same behavior.

Thanks
