Are there much difference in lens hoods?

This may be one of those personal preferences about the choices of lens hoods but I've notice a few different options. Some scalloped to varying degree and some are just straight hoods. Is there that much difference in controlling light to be concerned with which hood design to select? Does it vary from lens to lens?

My understanding is that it varies from lens to lens and is determined by the viewing angle of the lens. Wide angle lens will have petal shaped hoods to minimize vignetting and the depth of the petals is determined by the field of view. Big zooms have a narrower field of view and will usually have full hoods.

Just stick with the one that either comes with the lens when you buy it or get the one that is suggested by the manufacturer. You can't go wrong ;)
