Recommended size and DPI for posting and printing

What is the optimal dpi for posting photos and the size from raw to jpeg? I use 1024, 72dpi for internet, 1386 size 125 dpi for laptop or high resolution lcd monitor, 330dpi for prints. Are these ok? What is the optimal WxH and dpi that suit ipad resolution, lcd monitors, lcd tv, internet etc, so you dont have to save in multiple size/resolution. The photos that look good in laptop have high contrast in lcd tv. Photos resized for TV are not good when viewed in laptop. What is the one stop size and dpi that satisfy all?

I did some research on this a while ago. The DPI size only seems to matter for printing as it tells the printer how big the image should be printed (how many inches to spread the pixels over up to about 300dpi). On a computer the image is X pixels by Y pixels in size so the screen displays them accordingly.

Try saving images at 72 and 300 dpi. They should be the same size in bytes, they are just tagged with different dpi for printing purposes. When you look at them on a screen they should be the same size and detail.

If someone has a credible alternative view I would like to hear it as I spent some time getting my head around this concept.
